I can feel my technical skills and decision making actually getting worse. I'm wasting time and energy on pointless processes and aligning with everyone on the tiniest changes. Everyone throws around the word "risk" blindly to overcomplicate and slow down your work.
Lucky for you you're at Google. You can leave any time and plenty of places will interview you. Look on the bright side, it could be worse. If you were at a bad/unknown company doing meaningless/trite work then you're pretty much screwed.
Golden Handcuffs
Google has better WLB.
Send a doc for review, get 20 comments saying “have you considered…?” with 10% of them being useful and the rest just to show the commenter’s influence.
You’ve described Amazon perfectly. Except here it’s not even 10% but more like 1% lol
I lead eng for a startup, and that even happens here. Non-actionable and non-specific PR comments are ignored and specifically called out during retros. It's amazing how much that's helped both velocity and quality.
You get to a point where you realize that 95% of software is a big complicated save button.
The fact that most people don't know this blows my mind.
Hey Riot, are y’all hiring remote nowadays? I always liked the company and had an offer there back in the day, but ended up leaving LA.
I think they get so many applications that they only hire local
can you guys fix that pathetic excuse for an ai aka bard
I wonder who approved the YouTube adblock detector, seems risky to me
Saw what you did there 😂
Preach Brother. Unless you are working on interesting projects, vast majority of work at Google is just bad for SWE career. Tech island, misplaced priorities in the name of impact and visibility has people, including SWEs and Mgrs, working on redundant work. My guess is that this is part and parcel of a company as big and resourceful as Google.
