Google is rescinding offers to thousands of people for temporary or contract work, blaming sinking ad revenue during the pandemic. The decision affects 2,000 people globally, including some whose start dates were repeatedly postponed, The New York Times reported, citing anonymous sources. The tech giant's move comes during a Silicon Valley "reckoning," as tech layoffs have ramped up since mid-March to more than 40,000. According to Bloomberg, the cuts will further slow the U.S. recovery, since tech companies boost stock gains and gross domestic product, and help other sectors grow. https://www.linkedin.com/feed/news/google-pulls-offers-for-work-nyt-4130313/ #tech #offer #google
“Many of the contract and temp candidates who had agreed to work at Google before the pandemic took hold in the United States were let go without any severance or financial compensation.” What the hell? You expect them to pay severance to someone who never worked a single day at the company? 🤨 There have been offers rescinded all across tech companies, you never get severance for getting an offer rescinded... you get severance if you get laid off... Also most of these temp positions are probably for things like translation of strings, hourly QA testers, food vendors, cleaning staff, etc. Unfortunately because of the pandemic, we simply don’t need as many of some positions. :/ I don’t know how you expect the company to just employ people that it does not have a job for... ?
Does this apply for engineering residents?
