Google just did a huge stock buyback too. Stock price > employees
yeah 70b with a fucking b
They have like 100B as cash in their bank accounts, Wondering if they have to resorts to such measurements. If you want to do layoff, do a deep cut and be done with it. With this kind of small continuous layoffs, you could save few million dollars here and there, which won’t even make a dent on your bottom line, but the long term damage to moral and company reputation cannot easily be fixed.
What's the python team?
Pretty petty when the company is doing so well.
Moving team to India lol Will it be different this time 🤔
Munich on Germany not India
Lol haven't read such pathetic whining for long time (: Folks enjoyed their life doing misc shit nobody cares about like linter and typecker, and now finally got caught and optimized tf out.
Tells me you never wrote code in Meta.
I have hired interns in India to develop tools. They are very passionate and amazing. You don’t have to pay L6 salary for Python scripting.
The python team most likely was working on building tools and frameworks and optimizing performance . This is a much more involved task than something interns can do. Need deep python knowledge, clean interfaces etc
It is not some random internal tool building python team that got cut. It is a core python team, many of who are core python maintainers and are on python steering committee. It almost feels like Google are moving away from python and no longer want to fund python developments. But then they still heavily use python for all the ML/AI stuff. So that just means they want someone else (maybe microsoft or meta) to continue fund python development and google will just take a free ride.
How big was the impacted team?
Read the article. 10 people.
