Google layoff summary so far

Based on various posts read so far for layoffs, here is the summary. - Every Product Area has or will do layoffs, Cloud and Youtube are pending. - VP and Senior Directors have more say this time (compared to Jan 2023). - Layoffs are happening at VP level, it's upto VP to determine the date and process - Highly technical and competent people were let go (this includes author of Java Guava library). In C++ world, founder of absl, major contributor to tips of the week left about 4 weeks ago (Titus Winters - voluntarily left it seems), a clear indication that everyone and anyone can be chopped anytime, your technical competence and past contributions don't matter. - Google is just like any other company now, politics everywhere at higher levels. Food is average, it's still free so still beat Amazon any day - Amazonification of Google is almost complete. I personally saw TPM being made Engineering Manager in Cloud security mid last year (it's very common in Amazon for a TPM to be EM) - The list of layoffs (so far) included few Directors, couple of VP's, some L7's, many L6's and rest are L3-L5. This is proportional to the distribution per level so no surprises there though majority of L8+ are useless so there was lots of bias level wise (at least 50% of Directors can be laid off). - Sundar has not taken full responsibility so far but it doesn't matter, the guy is useless, lacks strategy and vision. - Rolling layoffs is strategy borrowed from Microsoft and other company layoffs probably to increase stock price but market is more smarter than Sundar and his cronies so stock will go up or down based on it's merit. Though Google board should note that stock can sky rocket on news of Sundar resigning just like Microsoft stock price increased after Steve Balmer left. - MBA's running technology companies will ruin it, Sundar has engineering degree in metallurgy from IIT (that means he barely got admissions with lower rank in competetive exams), wasted one engineering seat if his only aim was to do a MBA. He was average, riding his luck by being at the right place at the right time. Any company hiring him in future will be brainless, he ruined Google which had some of the best and brightest talent in this industry. - I am expecting (speculation) that Cloud will do before next stock vest date (before 25th ?) to avoid extra month of RSU vesting - Severance package this time was not as generous as Jan 2023 but not bad either. 2 months of Garden leave with stocks vesting (3 months for people in NY because of state law - 90 days notice), 14 weeks of salary (no stock vest), 1 week of salary for every year worked. Medical will stop after 2 months (last year it was 6 months) - Next stage is lower ranking people and PIP's which will start after annual performance ratings are released next week, I am suspecting those will not get the same severance package. People trying to run after Google, it's not worth it. If you are in Amazon then it's better, there are many worse companies so relatively speaking google is still a paradise but it will ruin mental health. People are smart but they are not that great which is evident from it's stock price. It is the new Amazon (I never worked for Amazon before but my management chain is from Amazon so I can see how bad the culture can be) #google #amazon

The severance is terrible.

Google QLkg45 Jan 13

The one positive is that technically people can still find jobs internally, but practically it's not possible.

Oak Street Health stinkra Jan 14

why not possible? Google layoff is like a pedestal this year.

Apple xbQc25 Jan 13

Brutal

Oracle wmeB00 Jan 13

Subsequent rounds’ severance will be even worse.

Microsoft p4n44 Jan 13

What is Sundar’s strategy at this point? Looks like all he’s trying to do is maintain the status quo.

Can you also tell if THE GOLDEN AGE is over and I should quit IT altogether or there will be a bounce back to the golden era?

Adyen LDwo43 Jan 13

You should quit. Should have done medicine

Cornerstone L1B H1B Jan 13

Too late for medicine now. What about MBA?

Amazon bbender Jan 13

For someone who never worked in Amazon, you seem to be obsessed with it. Even used an amazon hashtag. The things you’re using to compare are basically Blind incel rumors except for the food, but free food really isn’t a common perk outside of faang. You’re seriously out of touch with reality.

Google eikckq Jan 13

he did say management chain was ex-amazon. what rumors are you referring to?

Meta qVuG26 Jan 14

Can TPM not convert to EM at Amazon? Or is that a rumour too?
