Google has just 2 or 3 strong pillars. That's it!
More than 3: Search, YouTube, Play store/Android, Maps, Mail, (to a lesser extent, Photos, Chrome, Pixel, Google Suite, Calendar, Nest/Home, Google Fi)
Google Fi lol. Calendar is suite btw
At least at MSFT some of our many messaging apps were popular. Of course we screwed up all of them to the point that we have to reset strategy every 5 years. GOOG tho. Chat just isn’t your thing.
Being over paid, but it’s ok because they ‘Googlelyness’
lol
I know that at least for one of those apps, no PM was involved, dev decided that he knows best and built something cool, but that had no market value. I think this is not unusual at Google.
Sounds better than most of the apps Google is famous for these days. Maps is a bloated brick thanks to forcing in images and stronger location ads atop a program with bad latency in the first place, waze is becoming one, chrome performs the same way in comparison to Brave (a fellow chromium browser).
I legit am curious about Slide's Disco. I can't find it in a Google search. lol.
too shameful they erased the entire search history on it
found a little blurb - https://www.engadget.com/2011-03-26-slide-launches-disco-googles-group-texting-app-comes-to-iphone.html
Agreed, but comparing Apple to Google is apples to orange. To use Imessage one have to use Apple device versus, Google cloud chat functions are competing with every one else. But I do agree, seems like Google has been playing the catch up games. It used to be Blackberry messenger app, then MSN, then to the Skype, then to the Slack(SFDC), Zoom, and MSFT Teams, Chimes(only for Amazon). MSFT has always been putting out strong products. Even with Gmail I think it has miles to catch up to the MSFT Outlook. That being said I’m an Apple fanboy, so hope it doesn’t come too one sided. But all Android devices uses Googles OS, so 🤷♂️
there is the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It’s Android without the Google spyware (Play Services) installed. AOSP is how Android runs 70% of phones in China, where Google is banned. Access to conversational data is very rich for advertisers. Chat app fragmentation keeps out the competition. The parent advertising company’s free email account, that everyone seems to use, links everything and everyone together across the portfolio of products.
Good to know about the open source @IBM thank you!
Google voice is still solid
Have you seen their recent calculator app update for Android? Turned decent app into garbage.
What was Slide's Disco?
Right, haha
