Google must be feeling the heat

The impact of GPT on search engines such as Google cannot be ignored. As a user, I can attest that my reliance on Google for technical and knowledge-based queries has significantly decreased, becoming nearly negligible. However, for other use cases, particularly those requiring near real-time information, I still resort to Google. This observation leads me tp speculate that Google may already be experiencing a noteworthy reduction in traffic, although they may not be publicly disclosing this yet. Once GPT-like technologies cam match real-time updates, it may spell trouble for companies like Google. This scenario is not far-fetched, given the considerable investment pouring into LLMs. Although Google may continue to operate for years to come, it is bound to lose its long-held crown position eventually. A prime example of this phenomenon is Yahoo, which remained in business but lost its dominance in the search engine industry, to say the least.

Must be the same for stack overflow. It’s much less valuable now.

Amazon ZKVRQWTMFD OP Apr 23, 2023

You are absolutely correct. In fact StackOverflow is facing a far greater existential risk.

Apple 🥸🤙___ Apr 23, 2023

I think this is only the case for questions with very simple solutions - that might make up a large share of their traffic though

Meta metricswin Apr 23, 2023

No. There isn’t enough adoption for day to day use to even be noticeable at google scale. You and me are not a representative sample of the world population lol

Meta pixlpushr Apr 24, 2023

This. Try explaining ChatGPT to your parents or anyone not in tech. They’ll have no idea what you’re talking about. We are a minority and in a bubble.

Meta Metamorpha Apr 27, 2023

Lol my parents use ChatGPT all the time. And they are retirees that can barely use a computer. It’s so much easier for them. ChatGPT is growing substantially faster than TikTok.

Google tCaU05 Apr 23, 2023

Lol

Intuit minmax12 Apr 23, 2023

Why

Google UkJv13 Apr 23, 2023

Those queries are not really monetizable either.

Intuit minmax12 Apr 23, 2023

Are all knowledge based queries not monetizable? Like near-by restaurants, tourist places, etc.

Google UkJv13 Apr 23, 2023

No, a lot of those are. I was referring to the SO like questions SW engineers use Google for

First American Fresh_Pig Apr 23, 2023

The Googlecels are about to come in full force I wonder if they domain block chatGPT on the Google network?

Microsoft yqiQ12 Apr 23, 2023

Doubt it as Google has been found stealing from chatgpt

Google AnP03 Apr 23, 2023

Lol if randos from “first American” have a say, Googlers definitely would. Why are you shilling Microsoft that’s an investor in OpenAI?

Google AnP03 Apr 23, 2023

Lol. Highly paid engineer figuring out which tool can do the job they are paid for.

Intuit minmax12 Apr 23, 2023

So you don’t google to figure out the best new tools, etc? How would you know?

Google AnP03 Apr 23, 2023

Figuring out best new tools is far from searching stackoverflow for answers. Atleast own what you do in an anonymous forum

SambaNova Systems sn_rl Apr 23, 2023

people still need to search on Google to get to the chatgpt cite

Uber fuhdgh Apr 23, 2023

If Google went down for a day, people will find it using bing/ something else.

Amazon lPkY15 Apr 23, 2023

I use bard. No doubt in my mind that Google will crush it and come out as a winner. They have solid tech and AI is about rate of improvement. They are crushing it.

Uber fuhdgh Apr 23, 2023

Yeah coz Google has such a great track record of building winning products

Google OnlyRandom Apr 23, 2023

Trust me, Google is fine

Amazon ZKVRQWTMFD OP Apr 23, 2023

I trust you TrustMeBro ™

LinkedIn wiccan1 Apr 23, 2023

Agreed, i would say Google UX is still far superior, but in terms of efficiency Bing Ai has no match. I myself stopped using google for day-to-day questions
