Google offer rescinded πŸ˜”

This is mostly a vent but I welcome any kind advice. This isn't how I wanted to end my year.

I started interviewing with Google in the summer. It was a lengthy process involving months of talking with many hiring managers over VC, doing an on-site, doing more chats over VC, being invited back for lunch with the whole team and a tour of the office. I passed HC, negotiated comp, and comp was approved. I finally got an offer a few weeks ago. The offer was verbal and I was sent an official looking email with the same numbers and a link to a portal that had a summary of benefits. I told the recruiter I was ready to sign but they stopped responding to my emails for a few weeks until the other day, when I was told they can no longer extend a formal offer due to headcount issues.

I invested so much time, got so excited, and now I have nothing to show for it. I worry about how it might affect my current job given how much time I had to step away for these calls and meetings. It just sucks.

In the long run it's probably for the best because the TC ($210K non-eng) was on par with my current TC and I would have taken a downgrade in terms of the amount of PTO compared to my current situation. But, I know WLB is better at Google and that would have been damn nice right now, and I was pretty proud of making it to the offer stage.

To everyone else interviewing, I hope your dreams come true this holiday season.

You clearly were approved for hire. You could suddenly hear from them at a later date. That’s happened to me at two different employers!

Kinda surprised they didn’t offer a salary increase from your current job at Facebook since most companies offer a significant increase these days. May be for the best. I bet you can get any other company offer then at big salary increase so it might even be for the best

Why do you wanna join google seriously. I just came from there to fb. My m1 package at fb is better than most L7 offers at google. Work more, promote faster and play harder. I should run a tv ad for FB with that line πŸ˜‚

It was not rescinded. You did not really get it formally. I hope it is really due to headcounts and not some bad reference about you suddenly came up. If it was a headcount then whatever others said: very high chance you will hear from them in the near future. Doesn't hurt to ask about it your recruiter either.

OP just said "email" so it doesn't sound like it was a formal PDF offer letter. OP: without that, it is just an idle promise.

    • was there a real offer letter ? If there was then you can even now sign it. If it was an email, its not an offer.

The amount of hoops you need to go through and some amount of luck needed to get into Google is ridiculous. But it is worth it if you are able to get through somehow... So unfortunate for this kinda situations...

Isn’t the offer valid for one year without interviews? Maybe they’ll call you back next year in Jan or Feb when they get new headcount.

Good point, the recruiter did not say that was the case but I will ask!

Thanks. I'm hoping the holiday break with family will be a good distraction so I can start the new year with some optimism!

You will be good. Offer is valid for 1 year and will definitely find another team. It's quite some overhead for Google to spend time and resource doing many other interview to get a valuable resource like you. They will come back. Spend time with family, the best thing ever to do. Be optimistic πŸ‘

Hiring manager fucked up. Pure and simple. You are now on the short list of folks who are HC and comp approved. When headcount gets released, you'll get a call.

OP. Whenever I get a new job I dont let myself feel like I "have the job" until I get my first paycheck.

And all jobs are temporary anyway

Maybe directly contact other recruiters and hiring managers or get referred by someone? You already passed the interviews so the most difficult part is done

Good idea. I have many ex-FB colleagues there now who provided references for me but I will ask if they have any direct connections with hiring managers with open headcount for my role.

Yup and another idea is to look for Job postings for your role at Google and send recruiters to match you for these roles

    OP
From reading the recent replies I'm assuming what I got was not a formal offer. But let me tell you, it sure seemed like one. It was very long - easily two pages. It started with "Congratulations on your offer to join Google" with details on the role and team. There was a header with the company logo.

Then it went into the compensation details we discussed over the phone, including a table breaking down the comp per year across four years. There were details explaining the model and date it's based on.

Finally, a list of benefits with a link to the Onboarding Portal. The portal didn't have actions to take though, just detailed info on health insurance, company holiday schedule, shuttle schedules, perks, etc.

I guess I got over-eager. I'm 40 and have worked lots of places. Never gotten an "offer" like this that wasn't official. Oh well, live and learn.

No expiration, which in hindsight should have been a clue.
      Dec 20, 2019
    • OP this might not be official offer, official one should come from docusign and contains signature of a Google executive. But you definitely should ask your recruiter, try find another team.
