Hi Googlers! What’s the latest duration and expectations for new SWEs (L5 if it matters) onboarding? Curious about things like: 1. Is there a long bootcamp process like meta? 2. Is going to office required for bootcamp/trainings? 3. When do we work on team specific tasks? 4. Anything else worth knowing about general onboarding expectations? #google TC: 300k
Curious to know if 300 is Amazon or Google
Amazon duh. Wouldn’t have made the move if I was a new Sr. SDE at Amazon. It sucks to be an old timer especially with stock drop.
Would be helpful to know Google TC
Also curious. Joining as L6 SWE next month.
So how was the L6 onboarding experience like? Namely timelines after saying/signing “yes, I accept”?
Onboarding can be remote. It's a 3 weeks long program. Afterward you can spend the next couple months ramping up without real work
Do folks generally go into office for onboarding though? If it’s 3 weeks, I am assuming there’s gonna be minimal team interaction during this period?
You may not even meet your team until you're done. I don't think anyone's checking on whether you come in or not but ask your manager 😂
Don’t do GTI, not worth it unless you find it interesting. Maybe pick only onboarding tasks relevant to your role, and the essential ones (eg protobuf). Even better, maybe ask your manager if there’s team specific codelabs or starter tasks.
I second this. GTI was just a waste of everyone's time My teammates on it were weird, and seemingly no one actually made friends because it was all remote.
Lmao same
Google TC?
Week 1 is just signing up for things (payroll, credentialing, benefits) and some training videos. Your manager should set up a 1-1. Probably good to get in a team intro that week as you'llbe busierthe restof your first month. Weeks 2-4 are GTI (Google Tech Immersion). It's somewhat of a you get out what you put in. First couple days are packed, then it slows down to 1-2 hours of classes a day with time to work on your team project. Take the time to do codelabs. That said, my team was a bit of a mess, 2 PMs, 3 TPgMs, 1 EM, 4 SWEs. So quite a bit top heavy. Even so, we managed to put something together we could demo. No requirement to go into office, sessions were all virtual and GTI team was in multiple locations. Some people on my GTI team did go in, especially if local to their team/manager. While some are saying skip GTI, I disagree. You have that time with zero expectations, so take advantage and learn.
