Been PM at Amazon for a year .. generally things going well but interested in applying for some roles at Google due to personal interest in those products Is it worth even trying in this climate of hiring freeze and layoff possibilities everywhere ? Which company is safer in this time?

If you get layed off at Google then you can expect to be treated well. Amazon will just throw you under the bus. Moreover, plan for staying never the worst case scenario
Google PM interview process with the HC approval and Team Matching exercise can easily take 2-4 months. So there is no harm in starting with the process and then see where you land. A lot can change between today and 4 months from now at both these companies
