I have an offer from Google (L5), FB (E5) and I am currently L5 at Amazon. I am on track to get promoted to L6 at Amazon (maybe Q1 2021). Which one should I pick? Current TC at Amazon: 240k (stock inflation has brought it close to 475k) for next year. FB Offer 400k Google offer 380k Still negotiating ... I am in a really good team within Amazon. But the tools are shit. I spend most of my time working around broken tools and feel like I am not maximising my potential. I matched with what seems like a good team within Google. Facebook team also looks decent. I have positive signal about it. Maybe not as technically solid as the Google team, but still pretty good. My background: ML PhD.
How long at Amazon? 475k at L5 seems insane.
I would recommend Google. I am there right now in an ML team. Very similar to you, have PhD. I have bias but hear me out. The technology and culture surrounding ml/ai is really good here. They really stress the importance of it in the team. And all ml/ai teams are high impact and great visibility. The tooling is superb which makes you spend all your time focusing on your work and not fixing shit stuff. Lot of learning opportunities, growth and strong technical foundation
Would you pay 100k for all the nice things you mentioned? If numbers don't change he should stay there one more year imo.
Depends on what is important to op. Definitely stay for TC at Amazon but that can lose a good team which is super important in my opinion for the next 3-4 years.
Well Google's offer is kinda valid for one year. The team assignment will change which is also a risk during covid. Perhaps you can ask a little more from google. My recommendation is to stay one more year at amazon and then evaluate your options unless you get a comparable offer from facebook now. Your profile is similar to mine. Last year I joined Google l5 with 3.5 yoe + ml PhD. Comp was similar to what you posted here.
Your current TC is 475k. It’s irrational for G to think you would join them at a 95k paycut. I would ask them to at least match and ideally exceed your current comp.
This ^ just ask the recruiter “How am I supposed to accept an offer for less than what I currently make?”
475k for next year. After that even with promo to L6 his TC drops to 260k
Fighting for promo at Amazon is stupid. You will be put bottom of the next band. Goto Google and enjoy your life.
Do you mind sharing your new hire RSU grant at Amazon ? I am just wondering how you are able to get to 475k from 240k total comp (even with 40% stock vest in years 3 and 4). PS: I am an L5 at Amazon too, but with TC of 240k after stock appreciation. I am in HW though and joined back in Oct 2016.
New hire stock grant was 235 units.
This is one of the highest I have heard for an L5 at Amazon.. awesome job getting that offer 👏 take the 94 shares and go 😅 but remember L6 promo might not give you more shares, probably just base pay hike because of your TC growth.
yoe?
3yrs industry. 3yrs postdoctoral research.
Are you in mid to late 30 then?
Typical blind poll. G at top, A at bottom , all others in between.
Should Amazon be on top?
Am I reading the results wrong? Or you just hate Amazon?
@OP did you get any of your experience before getting your PhD? I also have 3.5 YOE and am considering an ML PhD program but am unsure if my non-ML experience will count
No industry experience before PhD. Industry experience will count. You've worked on real world engineering problems and that is valuable.
