I applied for a position at Google a week before, suddenly this morning a phone number from Austin called me saying he is the recruiter of Google asking about my preference about positions etc. Should I receive an email first? Is this scam?

Why wonder just ask them to email you
I don’t think it’s a scam, sometimes they call you directly if you applied for a role (not if they found your profile)
You can get direct call if you shared contact info

Scam, email notification shud come first
I’ve been called but I was previously an intern, cut from team match this last summer then called to be added back in a month later. Also then calling you is common when they share either really good news or bad news. Maybe the recruiter just likes phone calls. Also just cause from Austin don’t expect to be hired in Austin, lots of their HR and recruiters are in Atlanta and Austin it seems
Ask to do a videocall
I got a call as well, a year back. Although they followed up over email.
Better yet, just call Sundar and ask him to route your call to the recruiter. You can never be too safe nowadays.
