I found a position really overlapping with my skills and applied. Received an email saying we will reach out about next steps. Then nothing happened. Is this a generic email? I know I sound desperate but I have another offer deadline and I was very interested in this Google position.

Definitely take the offer you have. Even if Sundar picked up your application and gave you a referral tomorrow you wouldn’t get through the process quickly enough to hit your deadline with the other company.
If you're not already in process with Google, the best case timeline is like 6 weeks to an offer. That's likely pretty aggressive even. If you have a deadline you should take the job and consider quitting if Google extends your an offer that you'd prefer.
I think I will have to do that.. Its just a bad feeling in my mouth to think about doing something like that.
That was my plan when I was in team match at Google but had an AWS offer. I took the offer but then found out they would no longer consider that a competing offer so they dropped the verbal comp range they gave me considerably. Do NOT tell them you took another offer. Team match can take months and sometimes never.
It is very common for a position to get matched up with an internal candidate very quickly so it disappears.

You can see the application status on the career site. If the mail didn't come from a recruiter's company email, then it's always a generic one.
I have received generic emails before and those didn't say we will get in touch soon about next steps.. may be it's just a different generic email.
Nothing is guaranteed until you hear from an actual recruiter. Without knowing the recruiter, to whom you can even reach out and follow up? Try reaching out to the hiring manager directly on LinkedIn otherwise. The same job posting will be found in the job section which may have the HM or recruiter name in it.
