BREAKING: Internal sources confirm another round of layoffs just hit emails at Tesla. For real.
Those who relocated with google- which did you choose ? Cash or points? Doing my math and points sound better cuz you get 10k in hand for furniture and misc, and the flights, temp housing and preview trip is taken care of. For cash option, after tax I get around 14k but I don’t get temp housing, no preview trip, nor flight. For ref, I’m mid 20s relocating from Boston to SF. Currently living with a roommate and she could take common stuff, so won’t need to move too much. Was cash option better ? Regret it ? Future TC: 280k #tech #relocationgoogle #relocation
I think the only time cash makes sense is if you have a partner who is also relocating that has a better package, so you can double dip. Almost always the points or package is a better deal.
I'm going with points. I believe the cash option is taxable so it's peanuts compared to the value you can get from the points. I added the cash value of 1 month temp housing + $3500 furniture and/or broker fees (cause NYC) and I was way over the cash value.
I went with the cash option when I joined back in 2019. Lump sum was about ~$25k after tax withholding. I was able to complete the move for around $14k myself. It was more headache but came out $10k ahead
Did the 14k include things like preview trip, temp housing and all that ? Or just the move ?
Yes it included a preview/apartment hunting trip
I took cash but I was a new grad with no furniture that only had to make a 150 mile move North. Just packed my clothes in my car and made the drive
How much was the lump sum for new grad ?
It was $10.5k before taxes. It's gone up since
Should have made this a poll. Sounds like cash is the way for you though!
The housing option is great. I plan to pick 180 days. You can use corporate housing and source your own up to the cap which is generous.
Just want to confirm, are you saying they give you an option to have corporate housing for 180 days?
Yes that was an option! I’m not sure if it is provided at every level but it was for L5!
Also relocated from Boston to SF about a month ago. I opted for all cash. Spent about $6k to get everything professionally packed and delivered with a remainder of about $12k after taxes had been taken out. I’d say it was worth it, but a little more burdensome mentally.
What about temporary housing, flights? Did you know SF or did you do a trip before ?
Was lucky to find a place quickly w/ no need for temp housing. Flights were cheap. My family is from northern california so I’ve been to sf often when I was growing up
Did you pick cash option or use the points? How is the temp housing for 1 bed if you used points?
I’d you have a family, will Google pay for their flight tickets as well?
Points is definitely better. How did you get 10k? I thought it caps at 3200 for incidentals
7000 for furniture if you don’t select full service household good shipment
I see. Thank you. Do you pay tax on that or net 7000?
