Damn 25% pay cut for Tahoe with same col. rough.
That is rough. But housing in North Tahoe is the same as LA.
Nv tahoe is no tax. And still cheaper than bay, but yes 25% is ggl greedy
Why do they care? Is the rationale that once the office open the ones closer can commute in?
Compensation is determined by the competitive market Less competitive market -> lower compensation
They care because they pay engineers huge salaries. If engineers surrender the power to easily leave because they have left areas with a competitive labor market then they aren't forced to pay as much, employees compensation is a cost in the profit equation after all. Never forget the company views you as an expense, I feel like this is forgotten in tech.
Nobody should be surprised by this
Long term strategy to transition people back to in person I guess P sure remote will be Obsolete within 5 years if this becomes a norm
Lol, ok. As if there isn't a significant shift among many companies offering remote work that will put upwards pressure on remote compensation. As if there isn't a whole slew of people that would happily work for 15% less to live wherever they want.
Remote obsolete within 5 years. Are you trolling or just flat earth proponent?
Return to office or pay cut, what did you all expect lol. Next is no promotion for remote as well. Managers + new grads generally will prefer return office. Can’t manage if y’all somewhere far far away
You do realize in many big companies your manager may live in a totally different city? Its not that uncommon
true it's rare that i've had a boss in the same office. that was one reason i told current company i was interested in role during interview. he ended up relocating but i don't really care.
People just need to start complaining about how this hurts people of color and lower income googles and they’ll change
Right, POC liver in lower cost of living areas, therefore their POC employees will get lower incomes for the same job. Argument formed!
This is big brain.
This is bs. Same work gets done. What difference does it make where an employee has decided to move. If it was for new employees only, that would still be bs, but at least it's fair play. Don't like it, don't accept it. But for existing employees it's totally unfair.. and cheap
Compensation is not determined by some objective worth you have to the company It’s determined by how much it costs to have you in this company vs another This is called the market Locations with a less competitive market (fewer companies competing for the same talent) means lower compensation => Capitalism <=
I assume you’re talking about the same work being done in India?
“we always pay at the top of the local market based on where an employee works from,” a Google spokesperson told Reuters. Lol
Google that was 10 years ago maybe yes. Now? Definitely no.
"only if you have screenshots of competing offers"
So has Google gone full remote?
Yeah I'm not understanding this either can someone from G comment I was under impression only 2-3 days remote was allowed?
You can apply for full remote. All this "tool" is, is an estimator. You have your current location, you put the city you would work remote from, and the tool will display an estimate of what will happen to your bonus and base pay. You can then click "apply", wait a few weeks, find out if you can actually go remote, and get a new offer letter that has your new comp. That new comp may be different than the estimate. This has been live for 6 or so weeks now, the article is way behind the times. Outside of a few edge cases where your pay gets worse but you're in driving range of the office that the article outlined it's generally a good process. Plenty of people built out dashboards showing where the comp decrease is favorable for COL vs unfavorable. Straight FUD, 1000s of employees have already filed for, and been approved, for full remote. Obviously they were super concerned with their pay.
It has started.
Nobody could have predicted this, except for literally everyone who said exactly this would happen.
What has started? Paying people market rate based on location? That started many many many years ago.
