Google search is criticized because showing low-quality SEO websites. Tried Bing to see whether people will switch to Bing+ChatGPT. Entered search terms such as "<PRODUCT> test" that commonly suffer from SEO. Result: Google search is a LOT better in sorting out SEO garbage than Bing. Conclusions: Google search is not becoming worse, internet is just becoming more noisy. ChatGPT can't replace search engine entirely, therefore ChatGPT+Bing won't replace Google.
where do you work op?

A proper response to ChatGPT would have been: We do not consider it a threat at its current state. Its technology is based on Google work (transformers, "attention is all you need"). We have pioneered LLMs and have groundbreaking AI contributions (AlphaZero, protein folding). We already have numerous LLM-based assistants developed internally, which we will deploy when we consider them to be meeting the high standards of quality that are expected by Google.
Yeah I agree this is a strong fail on Sundar. But I think the founders forced his hand here. They got terrified looking at punditry as opposed to metrics. Again my personal opinion, not a fact I know of
The more people use bing/cgpt the better it will get with more relevant searches.
Oh man ranked two complex products so accurately with such a huge input set. Mind = blown.
I'm just imitating what a normal user would do to decide between these products doing a simple test. The biggest pain point for me as a user is SEO garbage. Not claiming that this is a scientific study.
Maybe ChatGPT changed entirely how people do search? It becomes more of asking another person who knows how to do search. Idk, it just blew my mind.
Bing != chatgpt. It’s trained on more recent news and imo better quality than chatgpt. That said, I feel like Google is superior in the UI domain, which is probably the biggest difference maker. Bing typography feels large and too clumped up.
Nice try Sundar Pichai. 🤣
"google it" has become so ingrained in our thoughts and speeches I doubt we can be reprogrammed so easily to say something else. A text based chat interface really doesn't seem that appealing to begin with.
Same thing people used to say about Nokia phones. People are forgetful.
iPhone success was tied to the App store, which revolutionized the industry. Will Bing + chatGTP has the same effect? Are we saying Google will stop to improve and adapt like Nokia? Just last year we were thinking Metaverse will rule the world and any company remotely tied to it were taking off like crazy.

Why no one cares about the lives lost in Gaza, Israel and busy in their own lives?
If you were right, Google wouldn’t be so quick to try announce/demo Bard. The thing is that ChatGPT (generically) isn’t really meant to replace search. It’s just that most people use search to get answers to everyday questions. As such, anything that can better answer those queries (and subsequently not show ads) means that Google is about to lose a significant portion of its PRIMARY revenue source. People will still use search engines to find websites. They just don’t use it to answer questions.
Well, that's exactly my point. Chatbots don't replace search engines, they are just better at answering certain questions. However, people are lazy and don't want to decide between different interfaces for every query. Therefore, a joint Google+chatbot is much more promising than Bing+chatbot. I personally use the ChatGPT chrome extension with my Google searches which lets me easily pick the better answer instead of thinking about the better interface.
If the interface is shared the ad revenues are not necessarily declining.
