I have an offer for a staff engineer at Google and am wondering how much to go about negotiation. My current total comp is 450k. What would be a conservative and an aggressive figure? Would 550k be too high for staff-level at Google?
If you won't get what you want at Google, you should try coming to Tableau as a Staff engineer. With the initial grant negotiated well, you'll be over 450k total comp. With great performance you can get 550k annualized even without counting the initial grant.
I've heard of 1m initial grants, but let's say you get 800k. Let salary+bonus be 200k. After year one, total comp is 200k (salary+bonus) + 200k (initial award after one year cliff) + 100k (initial award vesting in year one, two quarters on average) = 500k. If you joined in the second half of the year, you'll get less than two quarters of initial grant additional vesting in year one, but you'll have one year of vesting of the first review grant. Annual review grants for Staff are 140-160k. With great performance you can get additional stock of the same amount from quarterly "gold stars". So annualized total would be 200+150+150k=500k.
Your info for salary and bonus has got to be off. Isn't staff 200k base salary and like 15-20% target bonus? That's like 240k for meeting expectations year one. I don't know enough about the stock but that number seems approximately what I expected
Tableau's salary and bonus (10%) are not as high as Bay-area companies like Facebook. However, the stock is generous, especially at levels higher than Senior.
And see the Tableau stock drop like a rock after a year....
there is no way tableau pays that much. they had trouble matching what i was getting at my present company. their payscale is seattle skewed .
Are you a Staff-level engineer at your present company and did you qualify for Staff level when you interviewed at Tableau?
You're at Yahoo and got an offer outside of Yahoo. You should take it
What's staff engineer at Google? L6 or L7?
Just tell Google about your other offers, and maybe they will go up a bit.
What're the typical numbers for staff?
450k is on the upper end of staff. Google rarely hires people in at Staff, so you definitely have plenty of room for negotiation. You could likely ask for 550k and get it but you should be even more aggressive I think and see what they say, especially since you have other offers. I have also heard of some people being able to negotiate immediate vesting so they didn't have the one year cliff.
I don't know the numbers. Maybe glassdoor can help you.
What level in yahoo can have 450k?
