When you relocate from one Google office to another in diff country.. will you get to keep the unvested GSUs?
Yes you would keep the GSUs. However, antiquated(#$&&$$##) governments would make the GSU handling as complex as hell. Depending on your to/from country pair, you may end up paying taxes at both the places ( 100% real) or pay higher of taxes or in best case only pay destination country taxes. Please note you would also may land up in a situation where you would get two salaries - one cash at destination country and one in decreasing GSU quantity in the origin country for the length of time till the GSUs goes down to 0 in origin country depending on length of work in each country. In nutshell, yes you would get the GSUs. But talk to the assigned tax advisors for impact on GSU to fully understand if you win or loose on taxes.
Cash at destination and GSU at origin sounds like a good way to avoid double taxation. Is that an option everyone has?
Unfortunately, no. This is not an option- it complies with source and destination countries laws. We have no say in what would happen :(
