Google vs Facebook culture

My friend is thinking to move from FB to Google (L4). At Facebook, an L4 has to find or create his own projects, making sure that these are impactful and can be well presented in the PSC(semester rating review). How does this differ from google? Do IC are required to find their own work or is it more like: there is a backlog of work to grab from? Thanks a ton for your help. I really appreciate it! :))#tech #google #facebook #culture #psc #perf

Yes

Thanks for your answer. Do you mean ICs have to find impactful work by themselves?

Can’t answer your question since I haven’t worked at both companies but I can say you are very good friend. You are helping him by posting question in his behalf and then would consolidate answers for him so he can concentrate on his google interview. And this is when he can also post the same question here by creating his own account.i wish I had a friend like you :(

Glad people got it :)

Depends on the team I guess? L4s I work with do not find their own work. They have a say in their work but there is a backlog. They need to complete their work independently if given designs.

Most L4s are not defining their own scope and creating projects on their own.

E4 at FB and L4 at Google have same scope of work. At E5/L5 engineers start finding their own projects and owning them.

Yah, L4 doesn’t have to do anything at FB, just execute on a project and deliver it. Most probably the manager is so lazy to find him a project and he is selling ir this way.

L4 at G takes an work item or sub project assigned by manager or TL and implemented it. Pretty much execution work

E4 don’t normally have to create their own projects. It’ll definitely help their direction axis in psc but it’s definitely more of an e5 behavior

This. Feels like expectation for a yellow zone E4.

I am the manager of L4s and been in 2 different PAs. Depends on the PA. In the current role, there is a pipeline of projects and L4s can pick an area
