I am graduating in May, 2024. I have offers from PANW for Staff Software Engineer in Santa Clara and Google for Software Engineer in Sunnyvale in infra-security team. The offer is pretty much similar for both. Given the layoffs at Google, what should be the best choice to select right now? A thing to note is that I am on F1 visa right now and need visa sponsorship to stay in US. I want to learn about the pros and cons in terms of work life balance, future growth and learnings. Staff position for new grad? Are you serious? Google is not doing GC until mid 2025, probably more. PANW is still doing GC
Staff is L4 in PANW
I’d pick Google as you are early in your career. Having Google in ur resume is better than PANW and opens a lot of doors later in ur career . Staff at PANW is L3 in google btw - PANW has severe title inflation
Holy title inflation. Looked it up on levels.fyi, it looks like Staff in Palo Alto Networks if equivalent to SDE II (L5) in Amazon and L4 in Google. It goes: Software Engineer Staff Software Engineer Sr. Staff Principal Sr. Principal Distinguished Engineer Sr. Distinguished Engineer Fellow
That’s correct.
OP, if I was in your position, I would have taken the Google offer, for sure. IMO, it will help in long run.
Avoid PANW, it’s basically Amazon
For some teams yea. Others have good wlb
Yeah, its chill if you set boundaries and make it chill. People will TRY and schedule 9 PM meetings on your calendar. Just decline them for being out of working hours and follow up via email if necessary. Boom.
Take Google over panw, If pay is same go with Google
Can you please tell more about interview ?
I joined PANW as a new grad about a year ago. My experience on my team has been very chill, probably best ai could hope for. Theres a lot of work being done, but you don't feel pressured to reach unrealistic timelines. You set your timelines, and are expected to stick to them, or update and change them if needed. Theres always work to be done when you've got nothing to do assigned, and you can figure out cool solutions to the issues your team is having during that more free time. That being said, I do know in the internal blind it's clear some teams are more toxic… soooo yeah
Go Google, too much of PANW is turning into a toxic shithole
I like PANW, and would recommend it if you want your career to have a cybersecurity focus. If that’s not the case, or you’re not sure, or if Google pay is better - then Google is the obvious top choice.
Agreed, OP - if your long term goal is cybersecurity, then go for PANW

L4 Google -> 45 interviews, 5 offers, AMA
How did you get to staff as a new grad?
Masters student + 2 YOE qualifies as a staff for PANW.
Don’t confuse, Levels at PANW don’t align to the industry. Staff is equivalent to L4.
