Thanks for sharing, but an important caveat is that this article is specific to the layoffs in Ireland. (That's not to say that performance isn't a factor elsewhere.)
Good to know that, thanks!
The silver lining of those who got laid off early at various companies at least won’t get labeled as low performer, and get general sympathy among the industry. Those who get laid off now and later will be scrutinized for their performance.
It's part of big tech narrative. We only hire high performers
Doesn’t matter, 3 years down the line most people won’t say “oh you were laid off in January, low performers were only let go after in March right?” It’ll be a quiet thinking “oh he was one of the low performers I heard about”
Execs to workers regarding layoffs, RTO, etc.
Will? Not happened yet?
Google's layoffs from January are still ongoing in countries that have stronger labor laws than the US, as Google often has to negotiate with local regulators or work councils. Super fun for those employees who are living in limbo...
Round 2 happening soon apparently I honestly feel bad for Google though
When entire roles are eliminated, performance is not considered. However, when reducing the number of people in a given role, performance is of course considered. That goes for pretty much anywhere.
Everyone is already asking if we were low performers or on PIP. Doesn’t matter that some of us were promoted in Q4. This is really depressing. No one will care about the difference. Lay off has a stigma. :( Really hustled from the promotion. Promoted twice recently. People just see layoff and question if hiring them is risky unless they personally know high performers or if they themselves were cut. This all sucks.
