Hi, I'm wondering what is a recommended way to negotiate an offer with X when they reach out asking for expected compensation? How do you go about getting your unvested stocks/bonuses/retirement from current job to be included in the package? Also, can anyone provide some insight into different levels and compensations? Finally, any tips how to get hired as level 7 (of course given that you have sufficient experience)? Thanks a bunch!
Ask for expected compensation in the L7 range.
Thanks. Is it common to ask directly for L7 or rather to say senior staff position or something along those lines?
L7+ is top ~5% of all eng in the entire company. If you think you're more experienced and more effective than 95% of all other eng then yes you can ask. But either way it's not common since those levels are rare, and the expectations of people at those levels are very high (ex. be the TL for an entire product)
And what are comp packages like for L6 and L7?
See this post for compensation at Google: https://us.teamblind.com/s/jYcrij5X PhD + 6 yoe = L5 If you have strong experience with extraordinary system design and leadership skills, you may get L6. I wouldn’t count on it to be honest, but it’s worth a try. But on the other hand, there’s a chance you get L4 if the interview doesn’t go very well. L7? Impossible. There are university full professors with 20 years of experience who join as L6. There are industry known scientists with hundreds of patents who join as L6.
This is really helpful.
Is L7 executive position? Or can you get to executive positions from lower levels as well (I.e. different track)?
What level are tech leads, generally? Do tech leads make more money than technical managers (generalizing here)?
You can be a TL at any level, it's an informal title.
Which part of X are you interviewing with?

Just tell them how much you're leaving on the table and ask them to match. If you want to be L7 then ask for the L6-L7 interview.
Didn't realize the interview types differ. I asked about the level of position (before I knew about these levels) before interviews and HM said that it will certainly be senior level position (PhD +4-6 yr exp). HM also mentionedned that the exact level will be decided later. If the interview is done and we are in comp negotiation stage, is it reasonable to ask for L7 upfront?
Sorry you’re not getting L7 with that experience. 6 if you’re extraordinarily good. But “senior” at google means 5.
