Is it possible to get a Google/Meta L4 PM offer coming from another FAANG TPM position with 2 YOE? #tech #faang #meta #google #pm
TPM to PM? Any PM experience at all? As the Google commenter said, it’s not impossible but pretty unlikely.
Nope no PM experience unfortunately.. would I be better off applying to their APM programs?
For Meta it’s called the RPM program, but they tend to look for people coming from non traditional background, ie not CS/tech/etc. It’s worth looking at and applying to though. Keep in mind it’s also more competitive than normal roles. I don’t don’t know much about Google’s APM so maybe that’s less a disadvantage in that regard.. If you can tailor your resume to sound more PM-like that might help, but especially with the current hiring environment I don’t think there are many IC4 roles and they do tend to look for solid experience as a PM even there and sometimes people with pretty substantial experience (esp if it’s at smaller companies) get leveled there. So id give it a shot but just being honest it’ll be very tough.
Just to set expectations, Google hires post MBAs as L4 PMs and they normally have at least 3 YoE + the degree and even that is crazy competitive. Better chance changing to PM role at a smaller company and moving to G afterwards.
Or going the APM route.
Ah I see thanks. Are you a PM yourself?
Loving the details shared here. Appreciate it as it helps plan next move
yeah it's possible, i landed 66 after leaving non-faang pre-2019, and left for non-faang for sr principal which at current company in the aerospace industry is parallel to sr director people leader track if i were to move now, i would be L7/67 but would need to crush the interview otherwise i'd get downleveled to L6 and handed RSUs
Nice where are you now?
headed to NVIDIA, working on accelerated computing don't start for another month, haven't told current company. just afraid whether my offer gets rescinded at the last minute i've had that happen last year with Google (took forever to get an offer and felt time was wasted)
Why people are still attracted towards faang after all this mishap!!
I mean I’ll do Uber APM program too 😂 can you refer me?
Ofc ;)
Recommend doing RPM at Meta. Highly unlikely that you can come in at L4 with only 2 YOE. If you are pressed to try, I wish you luck. I you can make it happen, update this group. Though I’m not expecting an update.
Are you currently a PM at Meta?
Yes
Prettyyyyyyyyy unlikely
Most PMs hate TPM, they dread being called a Project manager and realizing how similar these two roles are, thus effectively blocking any opportunity of role transfer etc. Honestly in most companies TPM get treated more like a fancy admin staff rather than what it is - a crucial role to run the business smoothly. Also, most teams dont need a TPM, they need a strong and responsible engineering team who knows what they are doing. Switch to a Strat Ops role as a stepping stone to get close to a PM transfer.
Pm and TPM are not similar? Both roles have completly diff responsibilities
As a past Microsoft Program Manager and a current Google TPM, I would respectfully disagree and fyi, until mid 2010s, Microsoft just had one role, ie Program Manager which was expected to do both Product and Program management.
Pretty unlikely in this market. Instead, use this time to transfer to a PM position in your company and gather a couple of years of experience.
Possible? Sure. Likely? Best of luck.
Any advice on how I could make this happen? I have a while before I hit the 2 YOE mark
Rotate or transfer to PM in your current company, then focus on learning and doing your job well. Once you have PM experience, start practicing interviews, it can be its own skill set depending on where you decide to interview.
