Amidst mass layoffs the US govt allows companies to hire Visa Workers without proving they first tried hiring US workers
At every job I’ve had so far, I’ve always done the bare minimum needed to meet expectations. I change jobs every 2-4 years either due to being PIPed or hitting the cliff after initial vest (no refresher as managers don’t mind me leaving for obvious reasons). Getting piped/severance is a paid vacation. So far I’ve managed to get my next job with a significant pay hike due to a combination of negotiation, multiple FAANG++ offers and luck of course. My Tc trajectory so far has been 120, 200, 350, 575. Not sure how long my run would last but no regrets so far as in addition to the paid vacation and pay hikes, I like the challenge of interviews. A common question is do I not fear not learning? I’ve decent free time due to underperforming at work. I use it to practice for competitive coding (not leetcode for interviews where you can memorize solutions), take CS classes, publish papers etc. For those going through a PIP but remember that PIP especially with a good severance isn’t necessarily a bad thing. You are A few years away from being a director Then you can hire all the Chinese and Indian h1b engineers and make them grind for you while you coast into big fat retirement with friends and family. It's called failing upwards.
You are my spirit animal. Also how did you get to L6 by doing the minimum?
How do you explain in interviews what you have done in your previous roles by doing the bare minimum? Don't the interviewer figure it out if you bullshit ?
It’s easy to bull shit. Most people are doing dirty work in the company, so everyone is making up things in interviews. 30-45 mins is pretty easy to pass if you can fake it.
mushmushy@ is spot on. No one would clear any interviews if they talk about exactly and only what they have been doing. Everyone claims their entire org's work as done by themselves single handedly.
Nice, I'm in the same boat, pipped everywhere, not sure how to get uplevelled though. Any tips please?
Interviews?
But they are primarily based on past experience. Maybe I should get uplevelled in a smaller company now. Or shall I fake it until I make it?
you are living the dream. all SWEs on Blind should worship you.
You need to teach us a course. How do you easily get a job. And why does it take 2-3 years to pip you out
Were you pipped in Amazon?
I'm like you, I fail upwards, but I've found the lifestyle extremely stressful.
I just went through getting pipped at my first job with TC 190, severance for a few months and then found a new job at one level higher with TC 300. After the 1 year mark at my old job I lost motivation and did the bare minimum, focusing time and energy on personal life and hobbies. Then spent a few months leetcoding and landed tc 300. Your story is inspiring to all of us. Refuse to slave away and give back power to employees. Perhaps this is the biggest loophole in tech today and you should delete this post before others hop on
What papers do you publish
