Growing up in a lower class family, I didn’t have many toys; all I had was a cheap PC and a Gameboy growing up. I remember pirating games until my PC couldn’t handle the graphic and the PCs also got really expensive year by year. Long story short, I don’t make crazy purchases but it’s nice to just buy a VR headset or a switch and it doesn’t break my bank at all. Anyone relate not being broke anymore? TC: 220k
If you had gameboys and a pc you are not from a lower class family. Would have been lucky to have shoes
lol, I didn’t had computer till 2nd engineering. Didn’t know what game boy was
Depends on how old he is. By the time I was a senior in high school, even the poorest neighborhoods in the city had some kind of high speed internet access. It may be hard to hear coming from a third world country, but you can have all your biological needs met, and still get the shit end in your society, and have opportunities kept far away from where you're at.
Lower class w Gameboy? Bruh I had tv and barely 28.8kbps dial up
This when I got hired after college. The idea of not living paycheck to paycheck was foreign in my family. Let alone things such as equity, benefits, bonuses. Anything that cost 3+ dollars was considered expensive when I was young. I still go into the deal section at stores and do heavy research before making big purchases. It's funny because as a kid I wanted so much, but now I don't have many wants at all. It's very nice to be able to get something when I do want something though. TC before recent raise: ~130k
Yeah I’m pretty sure this part of me won’t change much in the future, it’s gonna stay that way haha
I was fortunate that my parents were able to buy me a decent PC in mid 2000s but they couldn’t afford a graphics card. Stepping out on my own shoes, it took me a couple of years to get enough TC for building a $2500 gaming PC. First time in my life I felt like I achieved something lol.
TIL having gameboys is not lower class 💀 I guess I was comparing to kids now with apple products and all different kinds of console
People also are from different countries here. I'm Indian and having a Gameboy is upper middle class. Growing up in India in the 90s I never even asked my parents for a gameboy
Gameboys were more expensive back than any modern console/iPhone. If you had access to this, internet, and a single family home you were thriving.
Try buying a house my friend. :) You'll start feeling broken again, and this time, more than the last time.
Sounds like you bought too expensive of a house
Actually agree though, anyone who’s buying a home in a city worth living and starting a family will start feeling like the “lower class” family OP is describing. Parents were likely thriving, family life is $$$$$. I can barely spend money on an iPhone/console for myself every year. Don’t even want to think about doing that for a family of 4 every year.
I grew up in India in the 90s. Having a Gameboy would put you in the upper middle class bracket. My family was frugal. As a well earning adult being able to have a coffee in a coffee shop almost everyday is a luxury that still blows my mind
First gen daca recipient - grew up in the poorest area in LA and now make six figures and enjoying life !
same here
Yes. I used to have to budget and split meals for food. Grateful to have a good paying job.
Yes, literally same for all lol. Same TC as well
