Is there any end to the greed in the valley? friend of mine was making pretty good (with stock appre) at company A. Company B seems to be the highest paymaster currently. So, he slogs and reaches company B. Why? more money. He was already making 700k at company A (after stock appre). Now he'll make 800k (pre stock appre). Really? When does this end? It’s difficult to not compare and more difficult to not feel bad for yourself. Am I lazy to not wish to jump ship after 4 yrs! Disclaimer: I should point out that he'd reached a cliff at company A but not sure about the state of his refreshers. tc:400k Edit: some folks are pointing out that 100k is not a big diff to switch. please note that 700k is *after* stock appre and 800k is *before* stock appre. So, the diff is NOT 100k.
For 100k i would not change the company. But 200k TC increase i would. Its pwrsonal choice. Dont genwralize that entire silicon valley is greedy. We are happy folks here :)
stock grew 3-4 times. original numbers were 400k. 700k is *after* stock appre.
100k is 100k...I refinanced to save as much
People change jobs at cliff. You should be comparing 400 vs 800 for him.
Just live your own life man. People like your friend are dime a dozen on Blind, nothing new. Move out of the Bay Area, nobody cares what you think or even about the fact that your friend makes $800k or whatever. I’ve been much happier after I moved out, it’s a clusterfuck of never-ending chasing behind material possessions like houses, cars, investments etc and nothing else.
Out of curiosity where did you move? I myself def debating to move or not..
Your friend should aim for $1mn TC.
Why is it greed to want to make more money? As long as it is through legal means and is not harming anyone. The rat race ends wherever you want it to end, and others don’t have to end at the same place as you. TC 150
This is the literal definition of greed. No?
Greed (or avarice) is an uncontrolled longing for increase in the acquisition or use of material gain (be it food, money, land, or animate/inanimate possessions); or social value, such as status, or power. Greed has been identified as undesirable throughout known human history because it creates behavior-conflict between personal and social goals. - Wikipedia
Why are you jealous of his ambition? Atleast he is working hard and not coasting. Get inspired and go chase what you want to chase.
To each it’s own. And in the immortal words of Gordon Gecko — “Greed is good” Greed makes you push yourself and do more, scale higher. It’s not about the money, it’s about what you’re worth. For a similar amount of work if you can get 14% more pay and a refresh in setting, that’s a good deal. On the flip side, someone not trying to iteratively improve is lazy and too comfortable.
You make 400k already at M and you are not greedy. Why care about their TC at all?
Yeah unless there’s more info, OP sounds jealous
Lol OP isn’t jealous they’re envious (see their comments hahaha)
