You CAN but it's risky and results in a lengthy travel restriction. I got my GC that way on a different non immigrant visa with a similar restriction. You think it's going to be easy to just stay in the US, right? No big deal? Just don't go home for a year? Right in the middle of the travel restriction with months still to go my mom got into a car accident and was in bad shape for awhile, lengthy hospital stay. I could not go to see her and didn't know if she was going to be ok. Let me tell you, it's not easy. Life can throw curve balls. (She recovered thankfully)
