Software Engineer here. I always found grooming meetings to be inefficient due to lack of preparation w.r.t user stories/UX specs and developer attention to detail. More often than not we run into follow-ups etc. I've been thinking about what can be done to improve the situation I am in. Wondering if you could share your experience. What works and what doesn't work etc. Note: Can you please share why your grooming meetings are going well or not going so well? sharing any insights will be helpful
It should not take more than 30 minutes to reprioritize backlog items across the team. If it's taking longer, then someone needs to cut down the time they talk or you don't have key stakeholders involved to get an answer immediately. (Or worse case the team is given too many items)
I am referring to grooming, not prioritization. Grooming for grasping requirements/user stories/estimations etc.
I dont get it, what is grooming for your company? Grooming to me has always been backlog review, pruning unnecessary items, merging and reprioritizing
Yeah that’s why many teams have moved to calling it “Backlog Refinement”. Honestly it’s a better term for it anyway
Prep work is done outside of refinement meetings so that we all come to the meetings ready to discuss the prioritized topics. Stories are discussed after already being broken down from features, which are also discussed. Designs are also usually ready, either as wireframes or mocks, to share for review with developers, but that is after most of the other technical details have been documented.
Backlog grooming, right? It's so inefficient for us it would be better to delete everything and rewrite what makes sense
yes, same here. Could you share what do you mean by rewriting?
Delete the whole backlog and write new stories that make sense with the current knowledge
