Guy got rejected but girl got offer

Saw a post on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/csMajors/comments/15kfl0n/the_job_market_is_fd/ There is some hiring manager for FANG in the comments confirming this. If this is true, then this is fucked up. Wondering if folks in HFT experience something similar.

What are they making out of this diversity score? How do they profit from it?

This is the case at fb from what I heard as well. They have freshman and sophomore internship programs and if they do well on those they get on junior internship programs. Since there’s only so many intern programs going around there’s less spots for others

Interesting. If affirmative action can help, i’ll take what i can get…job interviews are brutal.

Had given 5 referrals for the new grad position last month. 4 guys, 1 girl. Only the girl got through past the OA round. Two of the guys told me they got all the answers right for the OA. No idea about the girl.

The fact he believes SAT scores matter says a lot. A lot of folks unfamiliar with the hiring process don’t know what interviewers are looking for either, which may affect their interview performance and also cause them to misjudge how well they performed. Since this is r/csMajors, he could take a probability course to learn the required sample size in order to conduct an experiment. Learning probability could also hone his problem-solving skills which are important for interviewing.

It’s another case of “I believe I’m better than anyone else so they must be hired for something other than doing well in the interview”. Some people don’t realize that their attitude is a factor. Arrogance!= confidence.

@Adobe well said. I wouldn’t hire this person even if he had a 4.0 GPA and perfect interview scores. If he were doing this experiment with two men, he would point out the other man’s race or claim that he has “connections” within the company. It’s never about his own attitude or lack of competence.

Multiple big tech have publicly shared “bold” goals regarding DEI hiring. Interns hiring seems to be a popular category. If you hire for a few dozen openings, for a job where 80/90% of qualified people are males, but you end up with 50% of women, as stated in your goals, you obviously discriminated the males in the process. There is also a discrimination based on color. For entry level SWE at big tech, it is easier to get an offer as a black woman than a white male.

This happened to be too (in India). Just because I am a guy, I did not proceed to the interview loop despite clearing the screening rounds. (this happened in a big tech company) I am feeling quite meh about the whole thing.

Rarely had women apply for roles I was the interviewer for. (average 2-4 interviews a week during peak) All the questions were standardized and we rarely care only if you got the question correct. Tldr: everyone got the same interview. No special treatment
