Sr. DSP Research Engineer-I

I got an offer from Starkey Hearing tech with this title. $115k base salary with $ 5k starting bonus. It is for a position in Minnesota. I have a PhD EE (US) and around 4 years of experience between Bachelors, Masters and PhD studies. They love me as I could see all interviewers complimented me after each round of whole-day interview. Paysa.com says avg salary for this title and location is 124K with 10% people getting around 160k. I get an offer from recruiter. She had asked my salary expectation earlier and I had told 135-165k range. I want to ask them to increase my salary as it looks like lowest for this title. I do not have any other offer right now but I hope to get those. What should I do now. Option1: Ask recruiter to reconsider salary and suggest something around 145k (I have seen cases where they reduce the amount asked so just asking +10k). I am not sure how to do it. Can I tell the manager as he knows me for few years. How to ask it in a professional and passive aggressive way? Option2: Accept this low-ball offer and later get a better offer from another company and negotiate. I know they want to use my interdisciplinary background for opening up new projects and I feel they might increase salary when I approach in right way. I am not sure what would be the right way! Many thanks dear community member for support here.

just ask for more. it’s pretty simple. don’t have to be passive aggressive state some reasons, reiterate your unique value add, ask for a specific amount more or better yet get a competing offer

I know quite a few sr and non sr DSP research engineers have left this place in the last year. If they really like you, you definitely have the upper hand here. However, this is a privately owned company in MN, so don’t expect them to go out of their way to match an offer they think is too high.

Thanks. Seems you know them pretty well. I m planning to ask for 135k that is somehow average for this title.

I work down the road from Starkey and have contacts there. Stick to your gun and ask for minimum of $140k. Anything less than $135k and walk away.
