Currently - Senior Software Engineer TC 300K YOE 10 My company started a relatively new venture capital (VC) fund - $225 million. Total employees/partners in the fund ~15 Should I switch to VC? I feel there's not a lot of opportunities for advancement (short-term) in my current role. And I'm starting to get slightly bored. I want to interact with people a bit more :) I could ofcourse go into management - but it could take a couple of years depending on openings/management training, etc. *An internal transfer to the VC fund should be relatively easy, but I haven't spoken to anyone internally about my interest yet. My concerns are as follows: 1. Job security. Is VC a tough/cutthroat industry? (I have a lot of job security in my current role. I could do this forever). 2. Can I make more money in the short-term? Long-term? Will this lead to better opportunites in bigger VC firms? 3. Is it worth the risk? 4. Most importantly, can I find/create an engineering position within the VC fund - where I can continue to code, but also get exposure to the VC world? *FYI, if I do switch, I'll probably need to do a fellowship for 3 months. Also, I could probably negotiate pay to be atleast the same as what I make now ~300k. #tech #vc #jobopening #fundingcircle
OP, how’d it go in VC?
Your company is gonna pay you $300k to do a job you have no experience in and train you to do it? Call me skeptical but if you can make it happen... why not.
Not exactly. Here's why - 1. I have been in the technology industry for 10+ years hands-on. 2. $300K/yr is not a super huge TC for a city like NYC.
It is if you have zero experience.
