I was getting my computer locked at by workplace IT and a personal message notification popped up from my partner saying something bad about the IT staff (“your it staff is s**t”). They noticed the message and said “oh maybe tell him to not send nasty grams to people helping you”. I was actually very nice to the staff despite them being super condescending to me and never did anything mean. Since then I’ve removed the personal chat from my computer entirely (there are no logs either and I’m sure they wernt collecting any from the other slack workspace where the messages came through). A few weeks later (today) I got an email from a workplace investigator. Asking to join a conference. I’m concerned it’s about this incident. How can I get in trouble for someone reading my personal messages like this? How can I protect myself in this situation? Any advice helps.
This is why you shouldn’t have personal stuff on your computer…and if I saw a bad message about me on a coworkers computer I would think they were taking shit about me and also would report you, so I think they’re doing the right thing
It wasn’t directed at anyone specifically. It might not even have been about them specifically.
It was about the entire staff
Expect spanking.
Was it “your it staff was shit or slut” That could tell if you’re fired or fired
Shit
Will be a slap on your wrist. Not a big deal. The IT person has thin skin. Tell your boss about it in advance so they can have your back if it’s brought to their attention.
Still very uhh spooky
Not really. Worse things have happened to other ppl. Your boss will have your back if you tell them what happened and that it was a mistake. Chill out. You’re stressing yourself out on a non issue.
Just turn it around on them. If they say anything - ask if they were going through your personal messages. Tell them that you see that as a serious violation of your privacy and that you want a report about who accessed your personal information and what information was accessed. Or just take it easy. If they fire you there’s always the option to consult a lawyer.
It’s a notification that popped up while they were getting help from IT. You have no expectation of privacy on a company owned machine.
I mean the investigator won’t know that
Do you know how fake this sounds. As they were looking at it your “partner” happen to message about the IT team specifically. None of this adds up and you’ve done something wrong. Also, if you’re speaking to an investigator, you’re likely fired.
No it really is true. I had a different slack workspace for personal messages
Oh. Just saw you’re at Google. Are you an IC? If so you’re fired lol. They’re looking for reasons to get rid of HC. Also post your TC or gtfo.
I just saw your comment saying you’re the one who actually sent the message? Why did you pretend it was the other way around? You should have known better and your gf should know not to put personal stuff on their computers. This is on both of you
You’re def right. But we are where we are now. It was easier to type in the first person. I’m hiring an attorney to advise.
Good idea for the attorney. Hopefully all they do is give her a warning and everyone can move on
