There’s so many meetups in the city. Java, net, aws, JavaScript, Python… it’s hard to make them all. But it’s also got me wondering - is it worth going to any of them at all? Is there any real benefit? I used to wonder if networking was the benefit but in all the years I went I only made one or two friends. Should I go to any? How often? How did it help (or not help) you? its all sales at this point
Sad it’s come down to that but good to know
the strategy is to find the new meetup app of the year every year in order to ride it until all the sales fuckers and promoter fuckers spam it to death with their shitty events only really works in nyc, sf, and la tho since theyre the locations that beta releases occur
Present at the meetups
You think this has value on our careers? Does it matter when interviewing or something? Interested to hear your thoughts on why presenting.
Absolutely! At least it did in my case. I was a salesforce developer in another life, and I used to present at some of the local meetups. It helped to establish myself as an authority figure in my community. It wasn’t uncommon for local businesses use the meetups for recruiting, and I got a couple of offers to interview as a direct result. At the same time, the company i was working for LOVED that I was speaking at events. It helped us attract more engineers, and I used my reputation as leverage for promotions. Career advancement wasn’t my focus at the time. I had a fear of public speaking (I still do), and I wanted a low-stakes way to practice. The meetups were pretty casual, and I knew the tech, so it was an easy way for me to practice. Plus I just enjoy talking about nerdy stuff with other nerds 🤓
