YOE 7 TC 350k ICT4 About 1/2 of my TC is my base salary. The rest is RSUs/bonuses and perks (Apple perks add up, discounts on apple products, partner discounts with bose, etc). I come from a startup culture, and quite miss the (relatively) politics-free climate, lack of a bureaucratic structure, more autonomy, influence, and simply being part of a fun atmosphere with team bonding and a feeling of family. I cannot risk being part of a small startup due to various reasons, so I've been considering mid and large companies - Twitter, square, stripe, slack, google and salesforce. I hear that they have a good WLB and culture. What other companies do you folks recommend? I'm willing to take perhaps a 10-20% cut in my TC just for a better WLB and culture, that is the extent of my annoyance here at apple. Money is not my priority, I just need enough to pay my bills/mortgage and save a chunk, and I do that already. I would expect them to match my current pay though, that's not too much to ask for I hope. I understand that the WLB and the culture depends on the team you end up at, but in my experience at Apple and after talking to many many teams here, I have also realized that each company has a set culture that pervades most of its orgs. For Apple, this seems to be a poor work-life balance and an expectation that you should be honored to work for them and should come to not only expect this, but wear it as a badge of honor. In fact, they flat out told us at my orientation that they work hard and pride themselves on it. Frequently my managers joke about having worked the weekend or late hours and how their wife/husband had to cope with it. My PM laughed the other day that he and his wife only had time to make ramen for meals that day owing to all the meetings they were in (I sure hope it isn't a daily occurrence). Thanksgiving week was off, yet I got 2 calls and a fair few slacks/emails, all of which I ignored. One then got escalated to my manager who sent me a text (at least he was nice about it) and so I took it up, and I'm going to be compensated for half a day. it wasn't even that urgent an issue and could've waited till Monday. The radar/email sent across had no acknowledgement that we were on break, it just said it was a P1 and needed to be looked into asap. This is dehumanizing and inconsiderate, and it happens too often. Another aspect here is the top-down management style, where your managers and their managers have a lot of sway over what you do. Often times we have work coming from god knows where and are simply told it has to be done by so and so time. Let alone being involved in the feature set, we're not even brought in to discuss timelines. If it feels ridiculous, at best you can whine to your manager who'd put on a sympathetic face but you know they can't and won't go push back anywhere. Team bonding is non-existent, especially in this org. There is and was no team culture or bonding (even before covid), I can't remember the last time we went to lunch together (when I asked my to-be-manager at my interview if they did team lunches, he just shrugged it off - "everyone's too busy"). The idea of pair programming is laughable, considering how much each of us handles. There's barely any bouncing ideas, we're all sandboxed in our own worlds and trying to get our work done. I'm sure it's better at other orgs though, but then moving teams here at Apple is notoriously painful. If anyone reading this resonates with this, I would appreciate any advice, especially regarding companies I should consider. Appreciate you reading this. #wlb #teambonding #culture
OP, what companies are in your shortlist? While the company/team I work for has a great WLB, TC is a total shit here in east coast. Keep us posted.
Thinking of twitter, square, google, airbnb to name a few, will keep you posted
Same boat. After the Thanksgiving break I realized how much I hate my current job. But I was able to fully disconnect this year without distractions. Looking for a reasonable Wlb and remote opportunities. Planning to leave Apple and move to SoCal or FL.
What team you at if you don't mind me asking? Also, what companies have you been considering?
Dm’d you
