Hi team, I have been working professionally for 8 years since 2013 in the DC area. Out of the 8 years that I’ve been working professionally, I was a Project Manager for one year but for the remainder of years, I have been in account management and in 5 of those 7 years, I was a quota-carrying Account Manager where I exceeded in hitting my KPI’s (I worked for 3 organizations as an AM within those 5 years). I got my MBA with an entrepreneurial studies concentration in March of this year at a top-100 school and I’m trying to make a pivot into either VC or PE, leveraging the years of working deals and business development experience within account management. I also worked at a SaaS startup company as an AM for 2 years as well. However, I don’t have a finance background which has been making it difficult to even get a screening call for an entry-level VC/PE analyst position. I’ve also also applied to small mom-and-pop venture firms and have not had any luck getting a screening call as well. On the flip side, I’ve been applying to Associate Director/Director of Account Management positions but what’s been hindering me is I don’t have either a Sr. Account Manager title or formal experience in management (I’ve been a Team Lead several times for a pod of Jr. AMs before but it was never a formal title that I was promoted into). I’m not looking to grow at my current organization as there is nowhere to grow - As much as I would like to be a Sr. AM there, the plan to set formal career pathing for Account Managers by management has been painstakingly slow and I would rather pivot into corporate development internally but there are no openings for that department. I could apply to Sr./Enterprise AM positions elsewhere but I am looking to get out of being an individual contributor and do something more fulfilling by either leading an AM department or team as management or going into a lucrative industry such as venture capital/private equity. I’m reaching a pivotal crossroads career-wise and would love to get your feedback on this scenario🙏
Is your Account Management experience at mid-size tech companies?
The first company I was a quota-carrying AM was fairly large (2,400+ employees, $1.25 billion revenue), the second was the startup SaaS company (over 600 employees, around $80 million in sales), my current company is mid-size (around 400 employees, ~$20 to 30 million in sales)
Sorry to be blunt, but “Top 100” mba probably isn’t going to help you for a job in PE or VC unless you have connections
