I've been getting some recruiters contact me for HW roles. One was Amazon Lab 126 and during a phone interview with hiring manager everything went well. At end i had an opportunity to ask questions and i asked about the group dynamics and culture. To keep it short the manager got somewhat defensive and i think i blew any chance to continue. Another was FB oculus but the product line wasn't in my area. Looking for insights into HW Quality/Reliability salaries with Base/Bonus/RSUs? Wondering if i should bust my ass and try Amazon or other FAANG, start up that pays well. My current TC: 11 yrs experience Sr. role $130k base/15-20% Bonus/ No RSU but 15% discount on ESPP which kinda sucks iRobot doesn't give RSU unless its a more competitive discipline to recruit like SW.
Looks like you dodged a bullet at Amazon
Idk for engineer in HW Quality role max I have seen is 180k including everything except FAANG! Apple Pay’s the most of course.
I’ve seen double that at a few non-FAANG places at 10+ YOE.
360k for an engineer role. Good for them!!!
My guess is that 11 yrs will get you L5 at G and E5/E6 at Facebook , which translates to about $280K at G and $300-320K at Facebook. I have no idea about Amazon. Never interviewed there and don't intend to. Traveling to builds in APAC in Economy every other month doesn't sound like a good job.
11 would translate to L6 at G potentially.
Not anymore. Maybe 5 years ago, but not anymore. It could happen if you were already Senior manager or Director at a smaller company. But if at 11 years, you are still senior engineer at a small company, I doubt you would get anything over L5.
Your pay is really low for your YoE. I can provide you insights into FAANG hardware quality and reliability role. Feel free to DM me.
Lab126 is the worst org you can get into for Amazon. Be prepared to put in 18 hours everyday. To answer your question though, this is what your pay might have looked like if you hadn’t blown your chance: 160K base, 100K sign on bonus (50/50 on year 1 and 2), 50-60 RSU vesting in (5%/15%/45%/45%) in four years.
I’m very doubtful on the sign on bonus!
Don’t care if you’re doubtful or not but hw Dev engineers (QEM, rel, AME) are one among the highest paid positions after applied scientists and SDEs
How should one prep for HW reliability roles ? Any resources?
DM
@Tropical, would you DM me too? Thx!
Your TC is definitely on the low side. I’d expect ~$165k salary and maybe $75k RSU. With Lab126 I wouldn’t stress. If manager got defensive then that’s not a good environment. I always say that people are on their best behavior in interviews. So if you see nastiness at all it’s a lot worse day-to-day. FAANG is going to be really bad for HW reliability with exception of Apple. Any other FAANG and your career will stagnate there as your knowledge becomes obsolete.
I'm located near Boston, MA. Would you still consider the $130k low? It seems glassdoor and Indeed and other job sites list anywhere from $100k to $140k for Boston area bit then this would be base salary and they don't report RSU/equity...if the company gives any.
Sorry not familiar with Boston job market.
OP, can you share how was the first 45min interview with FB? Was it technical or mostly talking about the background?
Initial phone screen with recruiter just basic intro, about the role, etc. Then interviewed with hiring manager and then had me interview with a Sr. Engineer that would have been co-worker on Oculus team. Prob 10 min overview on resume and anything on your resume is fair game so we did get into some details. Some questions around Reliability metrics, probability distributions (Weibull), how to quantify reliability, etc. Then got into testing from Temp, vibe, ingress, drop, etc. As a Sr engineer i developed test plans, sample sizes and test profiles and the test engineers/techs ran them. Also got into some hypotheticals, getting different results than expected, inability to recreate a failure, etc. Also touched on some Accelerated testing, Arrhenius, Peck, etc. I think they liked me but i think they were going for some one more specialized with PhD in materials science. Maybe they had a specific problem they were trying to solve vs. a more system level person for that particular role.
I felt that my salary of 120k is shameful with 1 year experience. Then I see your post

What questions were asked at F & A telephonic round? For 11 yoe salaries should be ~300k tc even for HW roles
dude at cisco you are talking about 300k
Are you kidding? Cisco is more like 200k. Also this is HW not SW
