Modi is a legend, will be remembered for centuries to come
None of the FAANGs (other than Fruit) make positive contribution margin with HW. They all take a big margins bath. Google with Pixel, Nest, accessories, chromebooks Meta with AR/VR Microsoft with Surface, Hololens other things. (XBox has a different strategy) Amazon with whatever the flavor of the year that they can throw on the wall. Hell - even on the silicon side, it's only Nvidia, Qualcomm and AMD who are decently profitable. Wonder how sustainable is this in times where consumer demand is cratering due to more important needs. Other than Apple, none of the FAANGs have anything sticky even from a customer experience HW+SW together Thoughts welcome. Laid off from one of the FAANGs Have found something allright for now.
You are right. None of the FAANG is hardware company except maybe Apple. Broadcom is also doing pretty good in their margin though
Broadcom is doing great But ALL of their high margins is not from consumer hardware. The consumer business unit (wireless) barely breaks even or may be worse
To be fair, consumers don't need the immense performance that drives margins. It's just how things are. Apple makes money from marketing and brand value rather than innovation lately, thanks to their innovation in the past and loyal customer base. Hard to replicate that in current times unless something totally new and game changing like Mobile was.
you're right but I don't like working here so i still want to jump ship to another one looool
You realize that most of the other FAANGs are non-HW companies and will cut losses sooner rather than later? But do realize that Apple is not a comfortable getting place to work at
yeah, you're right. but also to be fair I'm not in HW proper (I'm in lower level SW)
Lol. Op your definition of Hardware and Silicon is extremely limited. No wonder you could only find something alright. Hint: Go and check TI’s operating margin and EPS growth for last 20 years.
Agree with what you may have indicated here TI and ADI cater to heavy industrials, infrastructure offerings, industrial sensors and in TI's case automotive. Was primarily considering consumer HW for that's what FAANGs do.
TI is paying slightly below FAANG in Bay area based on my sources for experienced hire.
You lost me at "Nvidia, Qualcomm and AMD who are decently profitable." Intel probably makes more profit than Nvidia and AMD combined even with their products being last gen... You need to start reading those financial reports...
@Intel I hate to be the one to break this to you, but you lost $660M last quarter.
Yeah I am aware of that and that is why I mentioned 2022...I am pretty sure the number will still be higher once 2023 is done...
OP if you are young you should be prioritizing gaining skills...The FAANG like pay will follow if you know your stuff well ... Chasing after stock price and brand names does not seem like a long term strategy ...
Nope not young...pretty experienced Have worked in Qualcomm and then one of the FAANGs for 8+years each. Had a good stint in each. Experienced in silicon, graphics pipeline, HW system design and general product architecture Doing some contracting work now for not on a visa anymore and we have paid 75% of the mortgage so can do with less money for a year and travel.
Great ... you shouldn't have any issues finding a great job... Personally I feel most Microsoft and Google HW jobs will move to India and Israel especially those related to servers ...Unless it is cutting edge doing it in USA doesn't make sense ...
Someone’s gotta made hardware otherwise where will all the software run?
Meta is into hardware to hedge their bets ie what happens if Tim Cook bans FB app on ios? This is just 1 reason of course. Google for example is into hardware to ‘proliferate’ Android, not to make $$ and others such as Amazon for decreasing TCO on the server side.
Just stay out of HW if you are starting out, its useless career to have, not easy to move around, companys dont want to entertain people wanting to move from one hw field to another, something that i like about sw.
SWE is the way to go
Meta also does infra hardware. These teams are hella talented to support our scale.
Infra hardware isn’t a product tho to end users. It isn’t sold so it doesn’t have the P&L but it’s the only hardware the FAANGs can’t get rid of
What is infra hardware? Data centers?
HW is extremely expensive to design and build. For most it’s only sensible compared to using commodity hardware if it lets you ship software experiences you otherwise can’t. Microsoft started making laptops because most OEM laptop manufacturers were shipping dog shit machines and damaging the MS brand. Apple is reaping the rewards of literal decades of ruthless, unfathomable levels of supply chain optimization and experience designing custom silicon that no other company has in combination.
Ironic since my Surface Pro 4 was the biggest POS laptop I've used for personal or work. The battery went to crap within just a couple years, and the display zonks out whenever it gets warm.
Surface laptop 2 has been good to me but I still prefer a MacBook Pro. Thing is that most PC laptops and especially tablets were so ridiculously, embarrassingly bad that even the Surface products that were bad were an improvement over other products in the same class.
