Well you have to look down on the table if you’re writing stuff on paper while figuring things out. But yes if you look way off to the side for a long time it is suspicious.
Or companies will start to invite candidates to do in person interviews.
I think on-sites should be done in person anyways

But how do they account for you switching to the zoom/meets tab once in a while?

It’s probably not the reason. Interviewees leave window for all sorts of reasons—random pop up, syntax search, etc. Recruiter usually doesn’t scrutinize this stuff. Even if you aced the HR, that does not guarantee that you move to the next round.

I agree - feels like finishing 15 mins early (on a possibly 1 hr call with 10-15 mins for background and other non tech stuff) was a red flag. You’ve done this with 25% (maybe even 33%) of the time left - maybe they felt like you’ve seen this problem before and fake “solved” it
