Recently, I read a lot of posts here on Blind which includes pip'ing of Employees, imposing stressed work for H1B visa employees in form of Cheap labor. I watched a video of TechLead on YouTube where he talks about continuous competition between co-workers to get good performance rating. Sometimes they backstab you to get a good performance rating. Sometimes boss/manager harass you to work more than 12 hours a day and also on weekends. Bosses tend to avoid your visa deadlines, you that they can make you work more. If a manager gets a clue if an employee is trying to leave, they immediately impose pip on them to get good performance. I'm just going to start my journey as a software engineer soon, I'm horrified after knowing all these things and also worried about my career. #engineering #software #software #swe
Don't worry. You will get used to it.
Does it happen in Uber too?
Does it
It is very much company (and team) dependent. Still though, as far as the high paying professions go SWEs have it easy. My gf works in private equity and when it’s crunch time she’s working weekends for a month and staying online until 3AM, it looks like hell.
Lol your gf is lucky she isn’t at Apple. Don’t come to this POS company

Nah just kidding, it‘s just your typical corporate BS. I have a pretty good WLB (think 9-5, 9-6 with 4-5 hrs of real work and rest meetings/chilling) compared to what most people say about amazon
It will really depend on your team and org. Your job is not your career so just remember that one bad job experience won’t necessarily mean the rest of your life is ruined.

Interesting I found this topic. I was thinking something exactly the opposite of this. Just stating my thoughts here although this is not what you asked. How entitled and spoiled the engineers are in tech companies. It is like walking on eggshells talking to them and telling them anything that they dont want to hear. Every service, tool, system, process, and the feedback loop is severely imbalanced in terms of whose needs they cater to the most. It is always the engineers and every other cross-functional team gets the short end of the stick. Guess who loses in the end, the company itself. No one else's input is taken into consideration. It is impossible to get the input back to the engineering team that their code is awful and buggy and is causing tremendous waste of people's time. If the companies have bought into this, why bother. Go with the flow and sign up to do exactly what you are being asked to do.
You are talking about Amazon? Amazon is where, people do what they are told to. Many bugs in production, you'll get fired.
