Hardware Engineer : frustrated

HW pay sucks - after 10 years, the salary doesn't even come close to SW engineers starting salary. It's not like my job is any easier!! WTF?! Is my thought. After a day's work, I find it hard to open up data structures or algo book and sit and read again. I solve some leet code here and there on weekends and I go exhausted to work the next week. I never feel rested. It's like constantly playing catch up game. And sometimes I catch myself thinking "dude wtf are you doing? Is this it? Am I going to spend my life in pursuit of this next tiny temp shiny thing?" These thought constructs seems fragile. This problem probably would have been simple if I had a single one track thought "SW pays better, I just want to move there", but my problem has layers: (a) meaning of life, (b) does it even matter in the end? Sometimes I feel like "fuck it" let's hit the rest button and go back to school and get a second masters. I have masters in Computer Engineering. I basically avoided every CS class because I thought I was bad at CS. But my interests and priorities have changed. I do enjoy solving leet code - just the pure problem solving part. I've been in the industry for 10 years..I sometimes feel career boredom.is spilling into the way I experience life. And I feel that's a fuckin sad way to lead a life. Any thoughts? Thanks guys!!

Try moving to a different hw company with better TC

I found a SW role that leverages my HW expertise. That helped with comp.

Could you please elaborate? What kind of SA roles? Internal switch within Apple?

Apple RoidRage Jan 10, 2020

No. To be fair, I've been doing software my whole career, but in a hardware context (architecture).

I was in a similar situation. HW is pointless now. Solved by getting my SW foot in the door with a tier 2 company, then moving up. Also there are places (like AV) that can use both HW/SW skillsets.

(1) What was your percentage in salary hike? (2) Did it boost your morale or did you discover that it was something deeper and had nothing to do with the job or domain? I.e are you experiencing the de feeling at the new job?

1) salary increased by 20%, TC increased by estimated 120% 2) No, SW is great, and HW really is pointless career wise. HW always felt I was working on pointless details rather than actually building useful things.

TC or GTFO

What's your tc? Blind rules buddy.

In the same boat and it sucks. There’s no way around it, grind and GTFO and start making real money. At least till all the jobs aren’t outsourced/AI takes over (inb4 triggered).
