Apple is a vertically integrated company. I wouldn’t say they are not a software company. They do both. But the vast majority of their engineers are in software.

Yes dude. I can quite few reasons : 1. HW interviews weigh a lot on experience unlike SW interviews that need only LC monkeys 2. It’s difficult to train folks and hence very difficult to outsource to Asia 3. Although HW salaries are as not good as SW, there is a peace of mind 4. We employ a lot of physics and math based concepts that makes us irreplaceable unlike SW that can be done by any cheapass
The peace of mind is in places where things are not aggressive. For example Google mobile was able to make folks from QC complain about WLB while at the same time cloud is able to cruise similar to Intel.

A whole bunch of non software engineers within our company try to pivot into software because the market rate is better. Hardware oriented companies are less impacted by Ad revenue drops but software as a career still pays best.
Most hardware is commodity. They are a lot more engineers available to do the exact same thing including circuit design etc. Don't confuse 1 bad year in software to conclude HW jobs are safer. Everyone is replaceable. You can count the number of companies in HW and see the trend.
