Has there been s time when economy was so bad that FANG had to layoff engineers?
Up or out is used to fire people like a sport. Haven't heard of mass layoffs at FB
What does up or out mean?
You have to get promoted under a certain amount of time until you reach E5. If you don't make it, you're out.
Google has laid off engineers but it was a long time ago.
FB and Netflix fire pretty regularly
FB reorgs a lot, like a lot. So if your team, or project gets scrapped you have to find something else or leave. Had engineering friends that had to reinterview for their jobs with different teams.
Like they had to leetcode again?
Yea. Full loop.
Yes if you are under perform
Amazon did few months ago. Microsoft does regularly.
Why though? Finances not right?
It's to clean house of low performers to make up for low hiring bar
