Has anybody been placed by one of the major executive search firms?

I don’t see a lot on here about exec search firms (Spencer Stuart, Heidrick & Struggles, Korn Ferry, etc). Has anybody worked with one of them to get placed at a company? How was your experience? Did they reach out to you or vice versa? How was the comp structure and did they advocate on your behalf? I’m in early discussions with them on retainer at a large firm so any experience you can share would be appreciated. TC: >100

Are you an exec? And what the hell is 100? Is it 100BTC?

If I put my real comp it would derail this thread. I’m hoping to get legitimate answers from people with experience working with exec search firms.

Always been positioned by Retained Search Firms only. They get close to 30-100K if you accept the offer. Depending on where you are in YOE, I would always place a number at least 100K above what you are making. It is very important to know that when you give a lower number, they do tend to lose momentum. More than giving a number, it is your wisdom with words that does the trick. For instance, are you the brand strategist of the POTUS? how do you prep POTUS folks to say the right things in front of press. Things like that help you up your game. I hate the part where there is NDA and that does come in the way of sharing competing offers and position/role etc. This is because the guy/gal you are replacing doesn't know that they are getting replaced but the other pain is if stocks are trading, they don't want news getting out. I have gone through this process many times. There is nothing different from traditional sourcing and recruiting. Remember that they get paid based on what your base is. They do get commission. I have known folks to ask me to lower my base pay just because they don't lose the deal. Have a walk to the offer vs. a walk away from the offer number in your head at all times. Good Luck!

Wow thank you for taking the time to write this thoughtful response. I feel like I’m doing exact what you’re recommending which confirms I’m in a good spot. If I walk away from the offer, does that put me in a bad spot with the exec firm? Would they no longer consider me for other opportunities? Also, I’m under NDA and comp is completely shrouded in secrecy.

If you piss off a recruiter, they have the option to mark internally that you are a problem which will deter them from working with you again. They feel as though you probably wasted their time. I don’t do this, but I see notes all of the time on candidate profiles that say “ignore”
