Working remotely for a company that allows you to work from anywhere in the US or outside the US, except Cali. I’ve been wondering if it’s possible to set up a PO Box in a no-tax state and use that to give to your employer for tax purposes. Is there anything illegal about it if you don’t reside most of the year in that state? (Hypothetical) what if you’re homeless or decide to live in your vehicle for a year then is it legal? It’s great if anyone wants to speculate but I’m hoping to hear from anyone with actual experience who can offer some sort of legal advice or direction. #remotework #wfh #legal
This is one of the most common ways of tax fraud (setting an address to the non resident low tax state). IRS takes high income earners from low tax states and runs their expense records to see if a majority of them matched the zip code of the denoted home address. If not, you get audited. One of the simplest forms of checks deployed
You’ll need to live in that state for at least 183 days a year. With that said, look at EarthClassMail. Word of advice, don’t get a PO Box — get a physical address. I’ve had credit cards and other things returned when sending it to a PO Box.
What if you move around all the time and live in hotels and spend less than 2 months in each state? And you don't have any permanent mailing address that can receive mail (you can't receive mail at hotels)
Sounds like you're gonna have a helluva time doing your taxes
Hey, you know papa Biden is hiring those 80,000 new IRS agents 🤪
The IRS doesn’t care about state income taxes.
Good point. Although I’m sure OP is up to other forms of tax fraud, like over reporting donations etc.
You owe taxes to whichever state your physical body is in when you are doing the work. If you don't pay them, they can come after you for breaking the state law that says to pay your income tax. It's a state thing; federal taxes are the same regardless.
What if you’re living abroad
To paraphrase the Wire, are you asking questions on Blind about a criminal f***in conspiracy? Gotta love the internet. A quick google search would’ve answered how simple this is for the IRS to catch.
The whole point of asking is to avoid committing a crime 🫤. I did Google it but there’s no clear answers to what I’m asking
Pretty sure “can I claim to live in a state to save money on my taxes, when I don’t actually live there” will come back with a clear answer.
Not paying tax in the state(s) you work in is tax fraud. Where you live/reside is not as important as where you perform your work, so I’m not sure what good a PO Box will do you.
So if you work at a different state for a few hours you’re technically committing a crime?
What if you move around all the time and live in hotels and spend less than 2 months in each state and also spend several months abroad? And you don't have any permanent mailing address that can receive mail (you can't receive mail at hotels). I was in this exact situation last year. The tax attorney I consulted recommended putting an address in Florida during the months I was abroad.
Blind is probably not the source for definitive tax advice. Jussayin.
Probably should just move to a state with a better state tax arrangement.
IRS just hired 80k auditors in 2020. Who do you think they will look at?

Why is our country owned by Israel? I don't want my tax dollars fund genocide. How can we stop this nonsense?
You answered it yourself, you can’t live in a PO Box. Pretty sure it’ll be tax fraud.
