The man I love hates me because I’m Vietnamese
First 6 months at Amazon were good but afterwards, I’ve been experiencing things ppl say on blind. 1. 0 team collaboration. When my manager is not in the meetings (stand-ups, etc) my teammates are complete rocks and no one says anything to each other. This was very apparently yesterday, after I led the sprint review meeting, at the end I told everyone have a good weekend. Not a single person out of 10 said anything and just left meeting. When my manager is in meetings, ppl that I thought were mute all of a sudden become the most talkative, bringing up BS filler items just to let manager know they are contributing. Also good luck trying to get help. If you ping someone, they’ll respond sometimes a day later. Just get general feeling that everyone is miserable and hates each other. Not to mention in meetings and design reviews it seems like everyone’s goal is to undermine each other instead of discussing trade offs and deciding on best solution. Super soul sucking 2. Blame deflection. Teammates deflect blame for blockers to each other and manager also blames team members for things that are his fault. One example is he did not come to our stand ups for almost a whole week straight and then went on vacation the week after. Afterwards, he got mad that ppl weren’t doing what he wanted when he hasn’t been doing his job for 2 weeks. 3. Constant dread and stress: due to the blame deflection and constant politics and amazon ruthless PiP culture, I always feel constant state of stress. Every-time I make a small mistake or manager calls me out for something it feels like I will be unemployed soon. There is 0 sense of commaderie on this team and seems like everyone is just trying to throw each other under the bus while inflating themselves to the manager so other people get pip’ed. Due to this, I’ve been extremely unhappy at work. I’ve spent time interviewing with 2 other companies in past month and now I have huge anxiety regarding those interview result because my current job is so miserable and I really want to leave ASAP and feels like these are the best chances I’ll get in a while Been having trouble sleeping at night and wake up with racing heart . Everyday I try to stay appreciative since I have such great support system of family and friends but I really hope this is over soon #anxiety #amazon
Really sorry and honestly sad to read this - I’m ex AWS and this was my exp too in 2017 - get out - breathe deeply - take care of yourself - there are plenty of great places with healthy eng cultures
Did you go from AWS to PayPal? I'm looking for an exit as well.
That seems like a dreadful environment. Just start grinding LC and leave after a year.
What's your level at Amazon?
What kind of culture is this? Sounds insane. Manager seems to be in control of your life.
It is insane and not that abnormal for many many teams at amazon
Amazon India or US?
US
How do you gets things done with no collaboration or cooperation from the team? I don’t understand why Amazon does not prioritize team collaboration. Total garbage culture.
Because they will always pip some percentage of people in the team based on rank. So really everyone is trying to be up on the rank and throw other people to be on the lower rank so they can survive and not get fired.
From what I’ve seen, Amazon managers thread people out as individually as they possibly can, thinking they will deliver more. It’s a terrible idea of course because engineering doesn’t work in silos like that. Hard to even get CR’s looked at that way
dm me for a much better team dynamic. easy internal transfer for SDEs
I was happy to see this post, then I saw the username :)
Why not consider an internal transfer first, OP? There are genuinely good pockets you can find with a little research and networking.
🏃 before u become one of them 🍌
You'll get through it. Just hang in there
Thank you
