Requiring an IG account prevented me from signing up in the first place. Twitter was nice because I could make as many random accounts as I wanted.

It's technically a way of misleading people on the product's success. Many people will not question metrics about daily active users vs actual number of users to see whether a product is actually succeeding. Reports will say "oooo Threads is growing". People may think it's a good investment opportunity, buy Meta stocks because they believed in Threads' potential where in fact it may not be the case.
Same old story. Most instagram users will click on it because they will click on anything in front of them, but it counts as a threads user forever even if they never use it.
Don't tell me you read every user agreement before signing up to any platform
Of course not, nobody does, which is the point. The initial rush of new users aren’t people desperately waiting to get on threads.
