Have you ever thought about working for a startup / tech company in middle America?

There are a lot of cities in middle America with great startup companies of all sizes that have great cultures. I work at one in Oklahoma City. While OKC may be less appealing than Dallas, Denver or other cities for some, your money can go a lot further than SV or NYC either way, and there's still a lot happening in all these cities every day - even in tech industry meet ups and such. Bonus: you can afford 2000 sqft homes on your TC and save for retirement while doing really interesting work. Have you considered it? Have you tried it? I personally wouldn't work in SV / NYC without being a millionaire already. While you gain a lot being in the area, you lose so much quality of life ... and people often assume that whatever's important to them in SV / NYC / Seattle doesn't exist in middle America, when it really does. Note: I'd like to one day move to NYC and work there. But I don't intend to until my savings allow me to live a similar lifestyle. I expect to be at that point in less than ten years. It's just hard to imagine downgrading. When I can put at least a 400k down payment on a home, I'll heavily consider it. #tech #jobs #tc

For anybody wondering why I might want to move from NYC, it's really just one thing: art. I love art. That's one thing that's more limited in middle America. While there are great things coming through every few months, and a lot of great local art, being able to see something new every weekend would be amazing.... Again, if I was a millionaire :)

We miss the Midwest and want to go back. Loved Chicago during school and St. Louis for work. Hard part is that we're dual career so the density of jobs in those areas might mean one of us gets a sweet sweet bump up but will be hard for the other. With more remote work maybe that'll be easier. We like SV for now and think of it as a tour of duty. Get good brands on the resume, get good comp. We'll jump out soon once our desire for homeownership gets too much and we get annoyed by the 24/7 tech atmosphere. If I had the conviction to do a start-up I'd want it to be remote/hq Midwest. That's not happening though. :P

Yeah - and I should note that I use "startup" loosely, where I mostly mean "tech companies" haha. There are definitely more secure options, which you seem to be aware of. Just wanted to clarify for others

Depends on what quality of life means to you. I’d prefer the party life and access to all different kinds of really good food and convenient public transportation in NYC over some suburb in middle America.

Yeah, public transportation is a no-go. There are advantages to living 10 miles from work in an area you like and only commuting for 20 minutes though. Party life? It's in every major city. Really good food? I've been to dozens of cities across America, and there's great food everywhere. Bon Appetite's best restaurant a year ago was in OKC. The internet has made inventive food global

I respect your opinion but can’t help but feel your standards are low 😂

Nice try, homeowner of stagnant value home in Oklahoma 😄

You should do your research

Move to a place like Oklahoma and prepare for your home to be the most interesting thing in your life. Lol. The reason people in middle America are obsessed with 5,000 square foot homes is because there’s nothing else going on there. I live in a big coastal city with access to fun stuff outside my house, culture, and diverse experiences. I don’t sit around getting excited about appliances and HOA meetings. Lol. And if you’re a non-white person in one of these Midwest towns, prepare for those fake nice Midwest folk to remind you daily that you should “go back to where you came from.”

That's certainly a take.
