I have this feeling that the corporation just wants us to obey. In the online company meeting, they say all the beautified things, like emperor's new clothes, people only type in good things, and the executives cannot accept to see any negative things. If a toxic manager does something to an employee, the HR finds out, and now the employee needs to go, not the manager. All the coworkers, manager's manager, director, VP act like they didn't see anything. What is this? I don't feel it is the same as a normal society in the US. The only reason I can give is: corporations have an agenda to grow revenue and income by15% or 20% per year, so that the stock price can be 8x or 16x in 15 years, and so they need the employees to strictly follow orders. It is all about money. If they have a "hero" that create waves and make that 15% become 12% and now they miss the Wall Street estimate, everybody suffers: the shareholders, the executives, all employees with stocks. The Nasdaq 100 ETF or the SCHD dividend ETF may remove this company from their list. If that toxic manager goes and the employee stays, a lot of info is lost or unknown, and the group's revenue may suffer, so that 35 million may become 20 million, and it is the same 15% becoming 12% effect. So they keep the "gangster" and kick out the "good person". A toxic manager may rely on this fact and do almost whatever he wants. What do you think?
Sadly US is becoming an Oligarchy like Russia with Bill gates, bezos, zuck, musk being the power brokers
This is the truth. Management is preferred over actual innovation. Engineers are mere wage slaves. Your super-awesome-feature that you grinded your weekend for is only useful to your manager, not to the company, customers or society. But this is also why companies become dinosaurs like IBM, Oracle etc. You only need to look at your own companies and ask if it is worth it to kill yourself so that your manager looks good.
Naive thinking. It is and always will be, reason why people who innovate left and make their own
Yeah I feel the same way. Its so mentally draining. I know people say things like its just a job and just focus on hobbies but its 8 hours of our life everyday. Feels a bit like the Severance tv show. I feel the managers dont even do it by choice. When you've been obeying for so long it just becomes a habit to them. Corporate life conditions the mind to be very robotic
I think to manager it is like: "well I have a mortgage to pay, tuition and all the expenses for the two kids, and the money I need to put in for their education funds... the retirement fund, and we have this one vacation this year and whether the wife is happy or not, so if I disobey or go into a bad relation with my manager, then the house, the kids, the retirement, the vacation and the wife might all be... I don't know, uncertain... so I will just do whatever that keeps my life going"
Exactly! I thought the same thing. I was surprised by the lack of spine of some managers and came to the same conclusion of why they would stay quiet and not say a word and let their reports or someone else get thrown under the bus
Company checks out.
So in summary the world hasn’t changed much
"when you are inside a corporation"
