Need to get this off my chest about what happened at Wayfair. We were all in, working crazy hours, weekends, even during our vacations. Leadership kept pushing us to hit those tough deadlines, said it was crucial for showing our value. Additionally we had been told that we have to train new hires in india so at the end of this we can pass these responsbilities to them and that leadership had other plans for us. Afterwards they promised some down time. But here's the real kicker, not even two weeks after we finished, they laid a bunch of us off. And it hurts like hell to say, the ones who gave it their all, put in 60-70 hour weeks! They were the first to go. Meanwhile, some who barely lifted a finger are still there. This is the real clincher, they're moving most of our jobs overseas. Just a month back they were talking about hiring more teams in India. If you're seeing new faces from there on your team, hate to say it, but they're probably your replacements. So here's my word of caution, don't fall for it. These guys, they'll use you up and then toss you aside. Don't make the mistake of thinking it won't happen to you. Don't waste your time working hard, don't waste your time working past hours, don't waste your time making them win, because when they win, you lose. Your life's worth more than this. #wayfair #badleadership #usedandabused #toxic
That’s cold
I like the line “When they win, you lose”!!
Maybe don’t put in 60-70 hours in a job and prioritize better. I would say the same to the CEO but his incentives are different.
Scroll up and notice this user's comments working hard to paint a different picture. It does not reflect the travesty that is the toxic work environment at Wayfair for others.
I’m giving a fuller picture, but okay. I also worked at worst places.
Cheer up bruh, I know it’s quite frustrating but that’s how organizations work.
It’s probably a cathartic experience for this person. I don’t see unionizing here.
All companies will do this
No. This sounds pretty awful. Let’s not normalize this behavior
Strikes in 2023 showed the value of unions. Not sure if labor unions make sense in tech. It could counteract these companies.
It is always important to know that slaving away is making someone else rich, not you. The only way to survive is to exploit them back. Take the money but reduce work until they fire you. There is no point working hard when the outcome is you are going to be replaced anyway.
That’s one way to go about it. It’s true. We all serve capitalism. Gotta look out for number one.
I mean — it’s only smart business decisions to move jobs to India. Employment is at will. And a job is your job— if you’re putting in 60 hours for some company, that’s on you. I don’t know what’s your complaint here.
This person needs to vent and not take responsibility. Wayfair did not compensate enough for that
What are they building that requires so many eng urgently working long hours?
They operate like 5 websites where they sell the same shit with different branding. They probably have a rats nest of awful business logic and styling shit to handle it. I’ve heard their code is shit and written by people 0-2 years out of college.
CEOs CFOs were all 0-2 years out of college when they joined Wayfair. Now imagine the tech debt that’s never worked on
This is what's going on at Etsy, too. It's strikingly similar.
I don't understand why anyone would haul ass over a company that thinks it's changing the world for selling Made in China particleboard furniture.
Or a “book case” for thousands of dollars.
My job was pretty chill. Don’t know what OP is doing. OP doesn’t sound like someone on a work visa…
