I want to start searching for a new job. I've been receiving messages from headhunters on LinkedIn which I mostly ignored so far but now I'm considering replying to a few. What are the pros/cons of applying to companies through headhunters vs applying directly? Which approach do you recommend? YOE: 9 TC: 300
For mega tech, def ignore headhunter
For startup exec jobs they mostly use executive search firms. So if you’re targeting leadership use them. Otherwise for IC or manager jobs work direct.
Typically more useful for quant firms but not all headhunters are good.
Can you tell me more in what regard headhunters are better in the quant field? That's my main goal (as a software engineer)
In my experience, whenever I’ve gone with a good headhunter, they’ve always got me past the resume screen compared to applying online. Good firms like The Options Group and GTP will do this. A bad firm will headhunt everyone remotely relevant and so quant firms will tend to ignore these resumes. They can also provide more insight on what the interview process looks like for that specific firm.
