Recently received SWE offers for new grad. Interned at HRT, was wondering if anyone could give more insight about any of them, specifically the culture, work-life balance, and career/bonus progression. Would especially like information on Headlands, I can barely find anything online about them. TC for all of them is 300-400k recurring, 500-600k first year. Don't care about the slight difference between them right now, care more about how their progression looks. #hudsonrivertrading #citadelsecurities #headlandstechnologies
That seems to be higher than some of the quant offers I've seen
This is post-negotiation. All 3 were willing to bid against each other.
Could you maybe share your negotiation strategy? How often did you go back an forth?
Headlands has a reputation for being somewhat of a sweatshop, but you'll be in Chicago so you will save a ton of money. In terms of TC growth I think any of them will pay $$$ if you perform well
at that TC differences in col are marginal for a new grad
this guy fucks!
I think Citsec and Jump tend to go higher than HRT in terms of mid career comp (at the cost of increased siloing and/or worse culture). Not familiar with Headlands.
Which one was 600k :o
Do you think interview performance made an impact?
Definitely did for CitSec, not sure about others.
What were your starting amounts? I started at 375 and 350 from citsec and hrt respectively, but I felt like it would be risky to negotiate. Now I'm regretting it lol.
I had higher for both, but they both knew I had competing offers before they made their starting offer.
Dang, so if you take Citadel, you get to invest some of your salary in the hedge fund right?
these shops are all like sweatshops and very risky. At citadel, they fired entire team at a whim and you have 3-6 months barring from working for any competitor (they pay you though) so it is really hard to jump latterally. you must be extremely smart to get those multiple offers but once you are in there, everyone is as smart or smarter than you and they are all competitive as wolves. I used to work at one of those shops and when I was a kid it was bearable to work all day and night but after a while it is pure hell. TC is not everything, life quality is, choose wisely!
What was your tc when you worked there?
I’ve only seen what you’re talking about at Citadel. HRT and Headlands treat their employees quite well.
One thing to note is that Headlands is a much smaller company than HRT or Citadel and probably has the pros/cons which come with a smallish company. Probably obvious, but I'd definitely work at HRT over citadel, but can't say I know too much about headlands to give good guidance about it. I've heard they've been doing pretty well overall though

Congrats on the offer. What school did you attend to get interview calls from these amazing firms?
Probably MIT
Don't think my school sends a lot of people to these firms, so I'd rather not dox myself. Not T5 or an Ivy though, I'd say it's on the same "tier" as UT Austin or GTech.
